this is a great product. Short but good. I use it for my 1st and 3rd grader.Thanks. Definitely recommend.

Great for review of info we have already covered in our other textbook. The really short chapters (2-3 pages) and questions make a great reinforcement activity. Might be too condensed to stand alone, however.

do not feel like it matched description on used status it was given. This book was almost completely written in.

Book 1 covers the Viking through the American Revolution. It works well for a variety of ages. There are 14 lessons.(Additional lessons available in Books 2-4)Each lesson is separated into 3 parts. A lesson begins with a list of vocabulary words and pronunciations. Then, it has the 2-page story. Finally, there are 2 pages of written work: questions for the child to answer in complete sentences, some true/false, some fill-in questions, and some questions for discussion. All answers can be found easily in the story. (You will need to purchase the answer key separately. I found ours on Christianbook.com for about $5.00)This curriculum is perfect for the Self-Teaching method where a child, age 9 or older, completes the lesson on his own, shows the completed work to a parent, and then checks his own answers using the answer key. (Robinson Self-Teaching Method)Or, for children under 9, it works well for a parent or sibling to read it to the child as the child colors a related coloring page or sits in the reader's lap. Then questions are dicussed with the child verbally. A parent would then guide the child in writing 1-3 related copy-work sentence or single words (depending on skill level) as an alternative to the questions. Sentences or words could be pulled from the book or composed by the parent. (Charlotte Mason Living Books & Copy Work Method)The Story of the USA, Books 1-4, is a wonderful, simple alternative to textbooks and is useful for all ages.

I read this non-fiction book aloud to my children. This book is organized into 14 lessons, starting with The First Americans and ending with The American Revolution. Each lesson includes a vocabulary list at the beginning to read before the actual lesson to cover any words that the child may not be familiar with, and each lesson is followed by questions that are broken down into sections entitled A to E. At the end of the book is a great Final Test which reviews all of the information covered in the book.We really liked this history book. Each lesson was no more than two pages, which was the perfect size for my older daughter (Grade 4) to assimilate. I loved the comprehension questions at the end of each lesson, which we found was a great aid in remembering the events.

We have used this series 1-4 books with SonLight Curriculum. The reading is about the right size. Each lesson starts with prep work, meaning new words-great for vocabulary. We shared read-a-loud duties between my 8 and 11yo. I like the question formats at the end with short answers, multiple choice and matching. I used the short answers to practice good grammer and penmanship. The other question formats are good for homeschool kids to practice test taking skills. The only complaint I have is it's a bit opinionated on the liberal side. While this gave me the opportunity to discuss the difference between fact, and opinion and when opinions are appropriate (not textbooks!), I found it annoying.

I purchased this with Sonlight's Curriculum Core D. The book has short informational excerpts on 1. The First Americans 2. How the Native Americans Lived 3. Columbus Comes to America 4. The Story of Slavery.....to 14. The American Revolution. It is definitely secular in nature. However, I do believe if it used as intended in the curriculum guide it serves its purpose well. It's used to help prepare students for the dreaded comprehension questions on standardized tests. I've shown my daughter how to read and analyze (by underlining, marking) the information to answer the questions. I don't use it for read-a-louds or for great literature. I've also used it for my younger son who is "along for the ride" so to speak since he cannot read yet.....he likes the black and white line drawings to color in. So if you live in a state like ours where standardized testing is mandatory this will help to prepare your child for the reading comprehension questions while supporting what you are studying in American History...use it loosely when time allows.

While this book is better than the later ones in the series, but there are better books out there. I used this with Sonlight, but these books were a big disappointment.
