Not only did the guide take me to sites that were as described, it helped me to identify another site, around the same area, that had larger, less picked-over places. It taught me more about the geology of the location. That, and some help from some locals I met, sent me home with some beautiful specimens, including some devil's toenails:) and some jasper and agate as big or bigger than my fist. This is the second rockhound guide I have by this author, the other written about Colorado. It, too, has proved invaluable. The photos below are just a couple from this trip. The petrified wood was a bonus found in the last location we nosed out ourselves. The yellow stone was in one of the areas below Hanksville. I don't know what it is, but it was winking at me halfway up the side of a mound of sand and stone. I don't have any pictures of the others.
This is NOT a "full color " book! The only color is the front and back covers. Very disappointed as there are NO color pictures inside.
I have a lot of books on rockhounding in Utah and other parts of the Intermountain West. This book is a treasure! Well written, well illustrated, and detailed enough directions to some great sites. This is the first one of this series I have purchased but I will be getting The guides for other states I travel to.
Should be titled Agate Hunting In Utah. There are very few sites other than agate sites in this book, and the opal hunting sites that are supposed to have been in earlier editions are not in this one. Pass on this, unless you really, really need to know where agate is found, which is basically all over every square inch of southern Utah, in my experience.
The color pictures, maps, and detailed step-by-step instructions were very helpful in finding the actual place to look for the rocks. Even though this book was recently updated, some things have already changed (a gate that was mentioned for one spot had been removed, etc. ), so it's still a little tricky to know if you're in the right spot sometimes. Overall, just what we were looking for to get us started on rockhounding in Utah!
Just got the book. I'm planning to use it in a few weeks to go rock-hounding and fossil hunting in Utah, so I can't say yet if it's chock-full of great tips. I'm writing a review because past folks had said that they got a black and white copy. I can't speak for them or their books, and yes, I've seen copies of this that are in black and white. The copy I got is full color. They aren't National Geographic level, glossy and sexy magazine quality photos, but they're color. There ya go.
Too many agate sites, too little variety.
The book was not full color. It was black and white copy of the book. went to the local store and bought the real book.
