I grew up in Albuquerque from the 1950's to the 1990's. I went back this year for my 40th high school reunion and was surprised at all the changes in the last 10-15 years. When I found this book shortly thereafter, I was thrilled. Every page was a step back to things that I remember from my life there. The much earlier photos were wonderful because they showed what was there before my memories. Then I could insert my memories and the book showed me what is there now. The early history of some buildings and locations is fascinating. The disappointment in reading this book is that the authors do not identify the exact location of each photo. From the photo captions we get a general idea of what location is pictured but it would be so much better if we were told "this is the intersection of 4th and Gold SW" or "this is looking east from Carlisle and Central." Not having the ability to figure out exactly where many of the photos are removed a big piece of the pleasure for me. Despite that, this is a interesting book that brought back lots of memories.

If you are lucky enough to live in Albuquerque, New Mexico, as I am, then you'll love this book. Of course you have to have an interest in history as well. (There's allot more to this place than "Breaking Bad"). Spend a Sunday driving or walking the city and see how many of these places you can find. I love it.

Wonderful book with great pictures. So happy to get it since I could not get it locally!

I selected this volume for the history and photos of my hometown. I've been in contact with the author and hope to have the book autographed next time I visit Albuquerque.

Very interesting

As anyone who reads her history columns in the Albuquerque Tribune knows, Mo Palmer knows Albuquerque's history. Now, here, at last, is a book she's written on the subject, a book that probably no one else anywhere was as qualified to write. In addition to being an area history columnist, Mo Palmer has been a photo archivist for the Museum of Albuquerque, and here, in "Albuquerque: Then and Now" she draws from all of her knowledge to create a truly valuable portrait of Albuquerque, then and now.Every one of this book's even-numbered page features an amazing old historic photo of a notable Albuquerque landmark, and every odd-numbered page features that same landmark (or whatever took its place) today. And all of the photos are captioned with interesting and concisely written information.Any Albuquerque area resident willing to pick up this book and take the time to flip through it will be sure to find the experience transformative and enlightening. It will amaze you just how much of Albquerque's architectural history has remained behind, and sadden you just how much some things have changed.Buy it, read it, keep it for yourself as reference and a reminder, or give it as a gift to friends in the Albuquerque area, or to friends who you want to have visit you here.

No apparent rhyme or reason to layout. No map or overview of locations relative to each other. Albuquerque has great light at many times of day and excellent vistas from many points in the city. None of this was taken into account for any of the modern pictures. All modern photographs look rushed favoring quantity over quality. Historical snippets are well written but overall quality of the book calls into question whether any serious fact checking was done.

I love reading Albuquerque history from many different sources, and I love "then" and "now" photos, and I also love reading the books that Mo Palmer recommended to my son when she was his history teacher. Well this perfect storm of affections converged this past month when my son gave me Mo Palmer's "Albuquerque Then and Now" for Christmas. This is not just another collection of stories from Albuquerque's past. Many stories tend to get repeated from one book to the next - the story of the Alvarado hotel, the early tuberculosis clinics, the early schools and UNM's early days, the Sear's fire, and so on. When you read Miss Palmer's book it would appear that it did not occur to her that she needs to cover that territory for you. It is very fresh, most of the "then" photographs were new to me, and the commentary was very enlightening to me. Much of the discussion focuses on the early communities and what they were like. I hope she will publish again soon.

PULLMAN, Philip. The Book of Dust: La Belle Sauvage. Knopf. 2017. 451p. $22.95.Here’s an example of what makes Philip Pullman’s writing so special. It’s early in the first volume of his new fantasy trilogy, The Book of Dust. Malcolm, eleven years old and the son of an innkeeper, is the protagonist. He’s rock solid, good and decent, and observant beyond his years. As in the previous trilogy, His Dark Materials, Malcolm, like everybody in this imagined world, has his own daemon, an opposite sex animal familiar tied to him both geographically (if the familiar moves away from her master, the master must follow) and psychically. The choice of animal for one’s daemon tells something about one’s character. Later in the book, the evil Gerard Bonneville is revealed as having a hyena as his daemon, and unlike the closeness that exists between other masters and their daemons, Bonneville abuses his.Now to the example I promised. Malcolm has just been permitted to see the little baby, six-months-old Lyra, who is being cared for in a nunnery near his father’s inn. Read on."Malcolm had never seen a baby at close quarters, and he was struck at once by how real she seemed. He knew that would be a silly thing to say, so he held his tongue, but that was his impression all the same: it was unexpected that something so small should be so perfectly formed. … Her daemon, the chick of a small bird like a swallow, was asleep with her, but as soon as Asta [Malcolm’s familiar] flew down, swallow-shaped too, and perched on the edge of the crib, the chick woke up and opened his yellow beak wide for food. Malcolm laughed, and that woke the baby, and seeing his laughing face, she began to laugh too. Asta pretended to snap at a small insect and thrust it down the baby daemon’s gaping mouth, which satisfied him, making Malcolm laugh harder, and then the baby laughed so hard she got the hiccups, and every time she hicked, the daemon jumped.“ 'There, there,' said Sister Fenella, and bent to pick her up; but as she lifted the baby, Lyra’s little face crumpled into an expression of grief and terror, and she reached round for her daemon, nearly twisting herself out of the nun’s arms. Astra was ahead of her: she took the little chick in her mouth and flew to place him on the baby’s chest, at which point he turned into a miniature tiger cub and hissed and bared his teeth at everyone. All the baby’s dismay vanished at once, and she lay in Sister Fenella’s arms, looking around with a lordly complacency.Malcolm was enchanted. Everything about her was perfect and delighted him."That’s magical: simply presented but with an aura of wonder to it. And even as the scene is being set –a young boy seeing a baby for the first time—magic (the daemons) intrudes on the scene. You have also a sense of what Malcolm is like and a vague premonition that Lyra’s and Malcolm’s relationship will be important to the rest of the book, probably –possibly? —across the remaining books of this trilogy as well.La Belle Sauvage (the name of Malcolm’s most treasured possession, a canoe) inhabits the same world of magic-physics as the preceding trilogy –sub-atomic dust leaking in through cracks of the world, scientists’ exploitation of the uncertainty principle, a weird but believable instrument that lies half way between astrology and physics and is called the alethiometer, which measures truth but uncertainly. The events of this series take place earlier than the happenings of the previous series but the enemy is the same: a devouring church hierarchy cracks down on heresy, cowing young and old as efficiently as ever did Torquemada. (“How can knowing something be sinful?” Malcolm asks one time.)The first trilogy, His Dark Materials, came close to saving my sanity. It came out when I was leaving for Dubai to take a job twelve time zones away from my family. I was lonely! I needed something all-consuming to read to take my mind off my isolation. I finished the first installment on the plane ride over (twenty-one hours, seventeen on the plane); the second, soon after I arrived; and the third, as soon as it came out --in England, not the United States –it came out there earlier. Like those books, La Belle Sauvage offers small (turns of phrase, particular descriptions of places or people) and large (scary, powerful bad guys, and good guys with interesting characters and pasts; a large-scale, almost cosmic fight for noble goals) pleasures. It will keep the reader reading from start to end with no stop.

I have been waiting sixteen years for this book. If you haven't read His Dark Materials, read those three first. If you already have, all you need to know is that Pullman reaches the same emotional depth, and continues to stare unflinchingly at the pain, loneliness, hope and bravery of the human spirit. I received The Golden Compass as a birthday gift in middle school. I was in Brazil and 14 years old when the The Amber Spyglass came out. I ordered it before the internet made international shipping easy and read it for a day and a half straight. Now I'm 31 and I finished the Book of Dust last night. It was like coming home again. If you, upon discovering The Golden Compass, also felt that you were finally finding answers to questions that rarely get asked, let alone answered, if reading His Dark Materials made you feel more connected to absolutely everything, if you also are disquieted by the extremism that tramples on the cautious, the kind and the considerate, then read The Book of Dust. It won't let you down.

The Book of Dust, Phillip Pullman's "equal" (both before and after His Dark Materials) is a delight--a wonderfully welcome return to the familiar but strangely different parallel world of Lyra Bellacqua, Lord Asriel and the chilling Mrs Coulter. Like our own planet, theirs is beset by ecological catastrophe--not heating up but dripping wet as they suffer deluge after deluge. As with global warming, nobody believes a catastrophe is nigh (except the water-wise Gyptians) until it strikes. Apparently, when Reason meets Superstition the latter will win no matter where in the Multiverse you reside. The forces of conservatism are stirring and the iniquitous Magisterium is ascendant. Baby Lyra is prophesied by witches to be of vital importance to the future. Needless to say, she is a person of interest to both the forces of Reason and Religion.Like the author's previous work, La Belle Sauvage is unapologetically political and unabashedly Liberal. There is, for example, The League of Alexander, a club of adolescent religious snitches who squeal on their families' or friends' slightest misdeed (the League's eponymous hero turned his family in for execution). They're little angels compared to the positively terrifying Sisters of Obedience who are running what is essentially a child abuse and slavery racket. Some people of faith escape his scorn but not many. To those who complain Pullman is anti-Religion I say "you're definitely on to something." If it bothers you, you may want to avoid him. In addition to Organized Evil (religion), there is just plain wickedness, personified in the wonderfully smarmy and grotesque character of Gerard Bonneville complete with a leg-gnawing hyena daemon. A former professor and full-time pervert they share some of the creepiest and therefore most gripping scenes.La Belle Sauvage starts off rather slowly introducing new characters, providing backstory to the main character, Malcolm Polstead and his coterie of friends and newly made enemies. Malcolm reminds one of the adage "still waters run deep" and like Lyra and Will Parry he is young enough to be naive but a bit reckless in his bravery; not classically educated but instinctively intelligent, and always curious. He and his daemon Asta (who hasn't settled into a single form yet) create a character whose depth and humanity is surprising in one so young but entirely believable. He and his motley crew--the scholar Hannah Relf, Gyptian Coram von Texel and Alice the kitchen maid are a formidable force for Good. Their first priority is to save Lyra from the clutches of the Church and her vicious mother. When the flood hits, the action rises with the waters. La Belle Sauvage kicks into a higher gear.So why not 5 Stars? Frankly, The first book lacks the poetry of His Dark Materials, a brilliant riff on Milton's Paradise Lost. There are no gay angels falling in love or Serafina Pekkalas bashing about on a "broom" of pine branches, no Subtle Knives, peculiar Texans or talking polar bears with a drinking problem dressed in armor. La Belle Sauvage is very Sauvage but not so Belle. Compared to the first trilogy The Book of Dust seemed prosaic. In fact, Malcolm resembles Will a bit too much; one could swap out Coram for John Faa. The Book of Dust feels comfortable rather than electric. That's not to say it isn't entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable. It is, however a bit of disappointment. I was hoping for more spark and inventiveness, not the occasional shiver. However, I am very glad the author has revisited his finest creation. I will be waiting in line, eager to read books 2 and 3. So too should you.

So many apocalyptic books don't seem very realistic. Goodwin's are the exception. Not only are they entertaining, but they also have some good, yet subtle, information on what you can do to prepare. Whether it's an EMP, terrorist attacks, hurricane, or tornado...everyone should have supplies, just in case.

I couldn’t wait for Book Two of Cyber Armageddon to arrive! It’s such a different approach from the standard EMP or Pandemic apocalyptic novels. Much more believable and relevant- especially with all the 5G threat warnings in the news from such diverse sources as WSJ, NPR, and various government agencies.

I love all your books. This book have me a wake up call for the many reasons to prepare as best you can. Not just food, meds, and security. Because it is in the Bible about how every one you love could turn against you. But you still have to put your trust in the Lord.

I read all of Mark’s books and he never failed to deliver excellent readings. This book kept me at the edge of my seat. I finished it in two evenings, which is a record for me. I felt sadness, anger, happiness and giddy all at the same time. Mr. Pritchett kept me laughing between sadness and anger. This book seems pretty close to what to expect during the apocalypse times. I can’t wait for more books by Mark. Let them coming Mark!! Love love them all.

Mark Goodwin's books hold the reader's attention. They contain romance, drama, and action. I highly recommend this particular book and the author.

Again Mark Godwin scores a goal! Love this series!

Really love this author. Can't wait for the next book. Great read.

And yet another exciting book. Got the audible version and listened straight through. This one really depicts what could and probably will happen to the average person in an apocalyptic world. Opens your eyes to the bad people that will go beyond their normal depravity. It shows just how hard it is to be truly prepared. I was born 13 years and a couple of weeks before Pearl Harbor, and I finished High School the same year Roosevelt died and 'THE WAR' ended. The years between 1941 and 1945 were a milestone in my life. I have been impressed by the way a lot of technological inventions from the 1930s were developed for military use during the 1940s and came into wide civilian use soon afterward.I have just finished reading Miller's revision, and enjoyed it immensely - mostly for its extremely detailed descriptions of events I heard about 70 years ago, only vaguely.I have just now ordered Commager's original, to compare mid-twentieth century vs twenty-first century views of "what really happened" - what went wrong and what went right.=One stylistic item in Miller's book, that I got pretty tired of, is that almost everything that happens is "the most" important, destructive, ingenious, ... of its kind that had ever happened till then. I suppose a lot of "records" were broken every month, week, or day, and some of them were superseded by a new record for the same kind of event before the war ended.=The African American and Japanese American fighters seem to be well represented in the text - also the role of American Indians (Navajo "code-talkers" and Comanches) is described.=One facet that kept surprising me was the many situations when advanced technology turned out NOT to be the winner, but hard and dangerous work by infantrymen was required to win the day.

I was 12 years old when WWII started and so I only have vague remembrances of WWII. This book helped me understand about the war from beginning to end. There are quotes from men (and women) who actually fought in various battles. This really brings home the terrible price of war. The book gives details about various battles and the great casualties we took (something that I believe was not told to the American people). I found the book to be very informative, a great read. It is disturbing at times to realize the price we paid in American lives. It certainly convinces one that war should be avoided unless absolutely necessary.

This review is for the audio CD version. My husband is a big WWII buff and thoroughly enjoyed this. He said it is informative with many stories about things which he had never before heard and was also entertaining at the same time. Anyone who wants to learn more than that history classes teach in school should get this.

This is a riveting narrative of the worse war. You feel like you are in battle because there are so many interviews with the men and women who lived through it. Then the narrative changes to the big picture of great battles and how logistics and a country's ability to manufacture the tools of war affects the outcome. THE BEST WW2 SYNOPSIS I HAVE EVER READ...

My high school education prior to the reading of this book had World War II as some semi abstract event consisting of Nazis, Kamikaze pilots, The Holocaust, the dropping of the nuclear bomb. After reading this book, I feel I have a much more thorough and detailed understanding of World War II, from start to finish. I have a pretty good grasp of everything that was involved in the decisions that were made, rather than some abstraction.Besides providing a detailed account of events, this book also provides correspondence and quotes from people on both sides of the battlefields, which fleshes out the reality of many of the battles. It certianly doesn't track every individual soldier, but it lets you know pretty well the kind of brutality and hardship that the soldiers involved in any given battle must have faced. The tragedies and the heroism involved in the battles and campaigns of the war are touched just upon the surface I imagine, but just the same, this account of World War II is moving not only in it's honest portrayal of the brutality that mankind is capable of, but also the nobility that mankind is capable of. There is also an accounting of the people who were able to look past the slights they'd suffered in America and see the true enemy of fascism. The contribution of blacks from the 1940's south, and of japanese-americans who had relatives being held in camps in America, are accounted for in both the european battlefront and the pacific battlefront. While such a thing is usually portrayed for political correctness, the accounts in this book are about individuals rather than groups, which preserves the true heroism of the individuals described.I highly reccomend this book to anyone who would like to have a more thorough understanding of World War II. It will take a few months of dedicated reading to read through it all, and I found myself taking a day off sometimes just because of how powerful some events were, but when you are done with the read, you'll have a gift of knowledge that you will in turn want to share with your family and friends.

The amount of research and information of World War II has been so gratifying and the details of the reports love the book and the narrator

This is a great book that covers the history of World War II. For a history book this is a very entertaining read

My boyfriend is a history World War II kind of guy and he loved this book. Would love to see more like this for him.

Song for a Whale, by Lynne Kelly

From School Library Journal

Gr 4-6-Twelve-year-old Iris has a passion for electronics and repairing antique radios. She's a strong student, too, except when she is hampered by the frustrations of being the only Deaf student in her classes. One day, Iris's science class watches a video about a whale named Blue 55, a hybrid blue/fin whale with an extremely unique voice; the sounds he makes are around 55 hertz, unlike most other whales, which communicate at much lower frequencies. Moved by Blue 55's very familiar struggle to communicate, Iris becomes determined to compose a song for Blue 55 at his frequency, and to play it for him in person. This mission involves a journey from her Houston home to Appleton, AK, that, miraculously, her widowed Grandma agrees to secretly arrange. Readers will need to suspend some disbelief in order to buy Iris's adventure as realistic fiction, but the nuances of her personality make her a compelling protagonist. Iris's depth of empathy, the joy she feels working with radios, and the skillful way she navigates two different worlds of communication create an authenticity that will resonate with Deaf and hearing readers alike. The paralyzing effects of grief are also addressed through Grandma. Gradual healing is depicted in a natural, healthy way, as Grandma turns away from isolation and begins using her talents, doing things that make her happy, and spending time with a loved one (Iris). VERDICT An uplifting tale that's a solid addition to most collections; especially recommended for libraries needing stronger representation of Deaf protagonists, which will be most.-Sara White, Seminole County Public Library, Casselberry, FLα(c) Copyright 2011. Review

"At its luminous heart, Song for a Whale is a tale about longing for connection and finding it in the most magical and unexpected of places. Fascinating, brave and tender, this is a story like no other about a song like no other. A triumph." —Katherine Applegate, Newbery Award-winning author of The One and Only Ivan “Song for a Whale is beautifully written and is such an important story for kids with big struggles in their lives.  I fell into Iris's world from the first chapter.  Lynne Kelly does an amazing job telling the story from Iris's perspective.” —Millicent Simmonds, actress, Wonderstruck and A Quiet Place"A quick-moving, suspenseful plot takes her from junkyards to a cruise ship as she [Iris] gains the confidence to stand up for herself and take control of her life. Written by a sign-language interpreter, this story incorporates important elements of Deaf culture and the expansiveness and richness of ASL...this remains a satisfying, energetic read. Iris' adventures will engross readers." —Kirkus Reviews"The strength of the book is its strong portrayal of Iris as a deaf girl in a hearing world and an intelligent 12-year-old in headlong, single-minded pursuit of her goal." —Booklist"Subtly and poignantly drawing a parallel between the girl and whale, Kelly (Chained), who has worked as a sign language interpreter, relays Iris’s venture with credibility and urgency. This finely crafted novel affectingly illuminates issues of loneliness, belonging, and the power of communication." —Publishers Weekly"Iris’s depth of empathy, the joy she feels working with radios, and the skillful way she navigates two different worlds of communication create an authenticity that will resonate with Deaf and hearing readers alike... An uplifting tale that’s a solid addition to most collections; especially recommended for libraries needing stronger representation of Deaf protagonists." —SLJ

#10,121 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This is such a rich, beautiful book, and Iris is one of my favorite middle-grade main characters ever. She is a bit prickly, perhaps, but for reasons the reader can totally empathize with. Neither her parents nor her classmates nor her teachers really understand her deeply. And despite it all, she remains caring and open to new people.Iris's electronics talents are handled beautifully. They aren't treated as some kind of "girl tech genius" mystical powers. Instead, Iris's narration shows the concrete process through which she has learned to repair old radios, and how her passion for it and attention to detail let her do things that seem like magic to the other people. The radio repair descriptions were a mini-highlight of the book that could be inspiring to a lot of kids. When Iris embarks on an expedition that helicopter parents (and most other parents besides) might find a little horrifying, the move feels true to her character, and the reader understands why she *has* to go. In the best spirit of children's literature, SONG FOR A WHALE is about a quest. Instead of a magical wardrobe or the Shire, this quest starts in a classroom presentation about a whale who can't communicate. But it has the same urgency and epic character as those famous quests, and it will change everything for the main character in a similar way.As someone without direct personal experience of deafness, I very much appreciated the depiction of Deaf culture and what it is like for deaf people to communicate with each other and with hearing people. Iris's narration gave me more insight into the day-to-day experience of a deaf person, making it seem close rather than distant, and illuminating its joys as well as its frustrations.SONG FOR A WHALE is a lovely, unique book, and I couldn't recommend it more highly!

Smart and expressive, Iris is a heroine that does not disappoint. Struggling for friendship in a school without other Deaf students, Iris becomes fascinated with the plight of Hertz 55, a whale who sings too high to be understood by the other whales in the ocean. Kelly wraps this beautiful story up in her simple, lyrical prose and gives it whale-sized heart. This luminous story about communication and connection will resonate with anyone who has ever felt misunderstood or unheard.

This is one of those beautiful stories where you walk in the shoes of the first person narrator and see a side of things you may not always understand on your own. For me as a teacher and someone who does not speak ASL, this was especially true. I loved Iris's strength. The relationship between Iris and her karaoke-loving Grandma was really special, and I was glad to go on their adventure to Alaska with them. Middle grade stories with animals can't stay on my classroom shelves, and I know that my students will love Iris's story as much as I did.

I love that Iris, the main character, does not allow her deafness to define her. This is a lovely middle grade book that shows no one should ever feel alone or isolated. I recommend!

When I first heard about this one I knew I had to read it. Because that cover is all kinds of stunning. And the story seemed amazing too. I do not think I have ever read a book about a deaf girl, and I was so excited to finally get to do that. Parts of this book were all kinds of awesome. But sadly, almost all of the book was bad. Oh.And because of that I'm giving this book two stars. Which makes me so sad, but it has to be done. I had so many issues with this one. Yet I also enjoyed some of it a whole lot. I have so much to share about it. First, a huge thank you to the publisher for letting me take part in the blog tour and for sending me the lovely book. While my blog tour in late January was supposed to be a review and a giveaway, I do not feel okay with sharing a two star review for a blog tour. Will be posting my review today, and will hopefully be sharing a spotlight and giveaway of an ARC post in January. I truly wish I could say that I loved this book. As I really wanted to. It seemed incredible. And looks truly gorgeous. But it was sadly filled with issues. I will start by saying that I have no idea if any of the deaf part of the book had issues as well, as I do not know anyone that is deaf. I will say that I found all of it to be written really well. I loved that the main girl was deaf. I loved reading about how she lived every day as a deaf person. Was so very interesting. And she was all kinds of awesome because of that. Love. But sadly that did not save this book. Because even though the deaf parts were incredible, the rest of the writing was so very much not. I could not connect to anything in this book. It also felt so rushed. And a bit awkward at times. Especially so because Iris is said to be twelve years old, but yet she felt years younger than that. Which was a bit depressing. I also did not like this girl. Because of her personality. She treated a girl in her class so very badly. And not once was that owned up to. It bothered me so much, at all times.Sure, it is written in a way that makes it seem like the girl in her class was an idiot, and doing everything wrong. But she was not. She was a girl who could hear. And who tried so hard to learn sign language so that she could talk to Iris too. But Iris did nothing to help her with this. All she did was turn away from her and ignore her and get angry with her for not being able to sign anything right. I felt like Iris should have helped her. Should have tried to be her friend, like this girl was trying so so very hard to be hers. Hmph.Which means that sadly I did not like Iris very much at all. I tried to love her, I truly did. But yeah. No. She treated this girl badly in the beginning of the book. And then near the end she reads something about her, and she laughs and laughs at her, and it made me dislike Iris more and more. Was not good. Sure, there were parts of Iris that I liked. Getting to know how she talked with sign language was awesome. So loved her friendship with this adorable boy that was deaf as well. It was pretty adorable. But was sadly too little. This book is about Iris being unhappy in her school. Since she is the only one there that is deaf. And her grandparents are deaf too, but her grandpa is dead and her grandma lives at a home for old people. Her mom can sign language too, and her brother as well. Her father was not good at it. And that was written badly too, because it was all kinds of painful to read about, and it really shouldn't have been written that way, at least, I do not think it should have. Parts of Iris's life was hard to read, which was bad and good. While at school, she learns about a whale. Blue 55. He has a different song than every other whale in the ocean, and so no one can understand him. He is all alone and has no one around him. This is somewhat a true story, and I did like that a whole lot. It was interesting to read about the whales and such. But also a little weird. There are even really small pages with the whale point of view. Yeah. That was odd. And the way Iris reacted to learning about the whale. Yeah. I cannot support that. Not at all. Which is depressing.I did love that Iris felt strongly about this whale. That she wanted to help him connect with others. Liked that she decided to make a song for him that he could hear, that no other whale could sing for him. But what I did not like is that she got obsessed with this whale right away and decided that she had to go to Alaska to find him, to see him. Did not like how she treated her family because of this. And then she runs away. With her grandmother. On a cruise ship, for weeks, without telling her family first. Uhm. What even.I cannot help but say that I found this book to be a bit problematic. If that is the right word. It might not be, but I'm not sure how else to describe it. This book makes it feel it was okay that twelve year old deaf Iris ran away with her old and deaf grandmother, who was grieving for her dead husband, and was in a home because they feared she could not take care of herself. Yeah. And they run away together. That was not safe. And it was not okay. Sure, Iris thinks about her family a couple of times while being away. Hahaha. That was not okay either. She is on a cruise for Alaska, far away from her family, without talking to them or telling them where she is going or why. Her grandma is keeping them updated, but that was still not an okay thing to do. Yet this book tells it in a way that it felt okay, that it was the right thing for Iris to do. That it was the only thing she could have done, the thing she was supposed to do. I do not support that at all. It was reckless and dangerous. Gosh, my review is much longer than I had planned for it to be. Sorry, haha. But can't stop writing about this book. I must share all my thoughts. Some spoilers. There is even a scene in the book where Iris jumps into cold water and swims toward a huge whale. Looking it in the eyes. And swimming around it. Not once is it mentioned that this is dangerous. And it was. Incredibly so. And I'm not sure why this book is making it seem like all of this was okay. Hmm. Can't help but feel that this book was not all that safe. Of course, it is highly possible that I am the only one to feel this way, that others will not.Which is also okay. I'm sorry to say that Song for a Whale was not a book for me at all. I wanted to love it, so so badly, but I could not. I found parts of it to be very good, and I wanted to know more. But most parts where not good at all. And I may have shared way too much in my review. But I just could not stop writing and I do not regret it. So curious to know what others will think of this book. Do let me know if you read it. Huge thank you to Random House Kids for sending me a free ARC copy of this book to read and review.---This review was first posted on my blog, Carina's Books.

Sanderson has rapidly become my favorite author in fantasy/sci-fi. He's a brilliant story teller, with incredible world creating ability and a breakneck pace that keeps you turning pages. I love his characters, and am amazed by the clarity and creativity of the worlds and "systems" he creates. The Reckoners series is truly a one-of-a-kind series... My only regret is that I have to wait a year for a book that I tear through in two days!

Many say that this is the weakest book of the Reconkers series, but I don’t agree. The first book was best, the second was the weakest, this landed somewhere in the middle. If you don’t agree though let me just say that being the WEAKEST novel doesn’t nessacarily mean it is the worst one of the series. This story was built on action, characters and setting. It was not at all a plot-driven story, rather it was the investment I had in the characters that kept me reading. The reason this book was the weakest of the series (I call it finale syndrome) was because it relied on plot when the other books didn’t. Instead of blissfully fluffing together a fast-paced adventure, we needed logical closure, and that’s where Calamity fell flat. The plot was always a bit shaky, and it was most noticeable in this book. It was always VERY far fetched - but hey that’s why we sci-fi and fantasy lovers read things like that don’t we? Anyway, it had to end somehow, and although the ending was confusing and stark in contrast to the rest of the series (easy to follow and fun) this required investment in the actual plot. I thought the ending was bizarre because it opened up the door for future books, or did it? It’s hard to tell and it didn’t give us complete resolution. The book was good, very Good in fact, but because it suffered such a bad case of Finale Syndrome, it can only get four stars in my opinion.

Like most great series I’ve read, I’m sad to see that the Reckoners series is over. Brandon Sanderson did not disappoint with the conclusion to the series, Calamity. In it, we find David, Megan and who’s left of the Reckoners team banding together to try to bring Prof back from the darkness of having embraced becoming an Epic. Megan did it (or is trying), so why can’t they do it for Prof, too? After they accomplish that plan, next they hope to destroy Calamity. But it is easier said than done, and more Epics and danger are ready to stand in their way.I’ve been told that the first book is being optioned for a movie, and I could not be more excited. Reading this series is akin to watching a Marvel movie. It has super-villains pitted against the heroes/Reckoners, so a lot of fighting and action occurring, with displays of supernatural abilities. We also have our main character, David, who is strong, smart, and determined… but also a bit silly and naïve. He provides much needed humor to what can be dark circumstances. There’s also a lot of camaraderie amongst the Reckoners, and chemistry between David and Megan. To me, everything comes together in just great storytelling. I would, and have, recommend this series to people who enjoy YA, action, sci-fi/fantasy, and superheroes with a twist.

David is determined to prove that the Epics can be redeemed. Prof, the most powerful Epic out there, is his target. This was my least favorite of the series by far. I was pretty disappointed as the first book started out so strong. But the ending was very unsatisfying. The beginning and middle of the story was fine, filled with David's hilarious metaphors and fun-snappy language between the Reckoner crew that had me smiling. But then its the climax of the story, and I just felt that it was completely rushed. The idea was there, but the execution was off.

The twists in this novel were inspired and kept me hooked until the very end. My only complaint is that I expected more fromBrandon Sanderson in regards to his "magic system." In his other novels like Mistborn his magic systems usually make logical sense and follow a pre-established set of guidelines. However, the longer this series goes on it seems like the powers, technology, and characters get a bit more thrown together. It seems like Sanderson didn't take the time to develop his characters and world building that are trademark Sanderson. This series seems to merely to be the product of a dinner conversation where one person asked the other "what would the world be like if Superman were a villain?"TLDR; Solid novel. Substandard world building from Brandon Sanderson.

"Calamity" is the third book in "The Reckoners" series, following "Steelheart" and "Firefight". "The Reckoners" series postulates an Earth like our own that has been overshadowed by an astronomical phenomenon that people have called "Calamity". The effect of this is that certain humans have developed super-powers. Unfortunately, this has not turned them into the Justice League. Just the opposite. They've taken over the planet, dividing it into fiefdoms, held according to how powerful their super-power is. And, they rule by fear and ruthlessness. The Reckoners are the human sixth column against the super-beings.This series has well-developed characters and an intricate plot. It has more twists than a pretzel, and it is sometimes hard to figure out who the bad guys are. It is a delightful read, but really needs to be read in order. If this is the first book you have encountered in "The Reckoners" series, look up "Steelheart" and purchase it first.Given that, I highly recommend this book. It is not suitable for young readers due to violence, but I'd consider letting teens over 14 years old read it.

I gave this to my boss for the holidays, and she loved it! I see her carrying it to meetings all the time. Good quality paper and a durable cover.

Nice bound book for writing all your secrets. Funny cover makes it suitable for gift or to use as you please.

This is just a blank notebook with a funny cover. Still makes a great "fun" gift.

I love this little book its like my word stress reliever

Bought this for staff at work as a "just because" gift and they got a good laugh and appreciated it.

Got these for two different co-workers and they liked them alot (well they said they did!)

I purchased for a work party. Shipping came later than expected and missed the party. Book has a matte finish that appeared scratched in places and looked used.

This is perfect. Just a notebook with a funny cover

Is this a good book? The answer is that it depends. If you are a retirement savings novice, then this book is a good starting point. If you have read the commonly available information and done some of your own research, then this book will not add that much value.I am a big fan of "The Truth About Money", read it about 10 years ago and gained a lot of confidence in how to manage money. I don't have the same feelings for this book.A couple of specific issues:* Edelman is referring to increase in account value through Dollar Cost Averaging (DCA) in comparison with stock market performance without making it clear that a substantial amount of the value increase is from new investments. DCA sounds good in theory, but the most important lesson is that an investor should invest the money as soon as possible as the general direction of the stock market is up. In general it makes sense for salaried workers to make an investment for every pay check due to employer matching and the fact that this is when the money is available to be invested. I personally believe that DCA is hyped up.* Edelman is correctly saying that you should invest your money in the vehicle which generates the best return, which is the stock market. He then muddles the whole thing by talking about balancing and buying bonds. It is almost like someone tried to correct Edelman during the review process and that he caved in to pressure from the reviewers.* The section on spending the money in retirement is muddy and ends up with a "it depends" recommendation. Edelman should state that it is impossible to time the peak of any stock market and that investors should stay in stock as long as they can take the risk. If you have a healthy retirement account, then you can take a lot more risk than in you just have the money you need to scrape by. It looks like there is a more in-depth description in chapter 24.* There is another flaw in the sections about how to manage the money that is in the account. Edelman is writing as if old money is different from new money; nothing could be further from the truth. Money in a retirement account is fungible, there is no difference between new money or old money. I believe that this is a significant flaw which leads to confusion.* The section on Roth IRAs is weak, it fails to take into account the difference between marginal tax rate and average tax rate. It is very likely that the average tax rate at retirement will be lower than your marginal tax rate at the time the retirement contribution is made. Hence it makes sense for most people to not choose tha Roth option. There is however one exception; if you are early in your carreer and make a lot less money than you expect in retirement, then it makes sense to put the money into a Roth. As an example, if you can afford making retirement contributions while you are a student, then you are likely in the 0% tax bracket and can make retirement investments tax free.* The discussion section about moving funds from past employer 401(k) to an IRA forgets that there are some 401(k) plans that have good options and low fees. I believe that Edelman's advice is too black-and-white, IRAs are not always better. My recommendation is that each investor looks at the options available and the fees before making a move. The ETF sidebar is shallow, do you really think you should choose an ETF over a mutual fund just because it is cool and you people do it? Take a look at comparable mutual funds and ETF from Vanguard and you will see that they are very comparable.* In Chapter 22 Edelman again miss the important difference between marginal tax bracket and the effective tax rate. Your 401(k) is not worth 40% less if your marginal tax is 40%.Overall the book is a comprehensible collection of good advice, but it brings little new information to the table for people with knowledge. I recommend that the issues listed above are resolved in a re-print.

I love this book because it actually got me to understand retirement planning and get off my butt to do something about it. I'm a smart person but financial planning is very intimidating to me for some reason. This book is very easy to read and has good examples. There are some good general concepts and of course recommends getting a financial advisor for the details. He recommends his own company but doesn't make it sound like the end all be all.I think it is very much recommended reading for the young professional getting started in their career.

Very interesting book, I just started investing recently as I am a first year out of college. Reading this book really opened my eyes to how important investing in your future really is. I suggest reading this book if you need to learn about how to invest, however, I dont think this would be much help to someone who is already aware of what type of investments are available to him/her. In short, this is a book to learn about what you can do with your money, not how to invest it.

As a former teacher of 30 plus years I was always amazed at the total lack of knowledge that young adults had about money/finance.If Ric Edelman's methods were taught to high school age adults - they would be better prepared for life. Very easy reading - funny at times - a must read for people who seriously worry about their future retirement plans. All you need to read this book is common sense (it is laid out very methodically with no finance degree needed to understand)

I loved this book and actually ordered a second one for my daughter who is no where near retirement. In fact, she is a college sophomore. But the examples about the power of compound interest and such illustrate the point about starting to invest early. Ric's advice about not to invest into a nondeductible IRA is understood but I think an alternative would be to invest into a nondeductible IRA (if that is the only account you qualify for) and to cash out at the earliest possible time (without penalties), pay taxes on the gain (total amount minus cost basis) and move proceeds to a taxable amount.

I completely subscribe to Ric's Financial Management strategies. His books are concise, easy to read and give the average mom & pop the information they need to make good, long term financial decisions. If you have not read any of his books, I highly recommend starting with his book "The Truth About Money" - that is my financial planning Bible.

very informative every one should read this book...I wish I had read this 30 years ago

All on RIC Edelman books were good even if I do not agree with all of his method .
