Nearly 15 years ago Ms. Thwaites participated in a research project exploring glass casting methods, for the Royal College of Art. The results of that project became a CD, "Mixing with the Best," which was quietly passed around glass casting circles for years and remains bloody difficult to find.I'll bet that if you asked 100 casters how to cast glass, you'd receive 90 different (and sometimes conflicting) answers. There are so many variables in glass casting that, as another reviewer said, it is not a matter of following a fixed set of rules. Rather, successful glass casting requires a deep understanding of the role each component plays in the outcome, and how to adjust them to achieve the desired result.Thwaite's book does a good job of explaining this, extending that excellent CD with more contemporary examples. She offers recipes for refractory mixes, shows how some of the best in the craft develop their work, and suggests firing schedules and processes for different types of work.Above all, it's an entertaining read. I've been casting for many years, and it still gives me ideas every time I open it. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the casting of glass.

This is the best mould making book I have come across. The information is very technical and allows a greater understanding as to why we use different materials and gives it from a scientific perspective. I have been casting glass for a few years now and have always been taught that you mix plaster and silica, but without a lot of answers about why certain people use one ratio over another not to mention the additives and what ratio you use those in. This book explains the differences between alpha a beta plasters as well as how the particle size of the materials help (or hinder) in the strength of a mould. I plan to use this book in future classes with students that are seriously interested in classes.

Mould Making for Glass (Glass Handbooks)This a great book. I have studied glass all over the world, and none of the classes I took went into so much detail about what the different ingredients in a mould do. Most instructors simply teach - "this what I do" and not "this is why I do what I do." The reason the WHY is important is that if you are interested in developing your own techniques or run into material variations, for example that plaster of paris is different in Australia than it is in the United States, with this book you can look at the research for similar problems and find your solutions rather than just taking a shot in the dark and adding things that you think might help. It is a great book and is going to be my holiday gift of choice for all the glass casters in my life. I was so excited reading this book I couldn't put it down.

Excellent book!However, if you have any qualms about UK centric descriptions and measurements, you may wish to find a British friend to 'splain it to you. My biggest problem has been finding American equivalent products with differing trade names; not really a problem at all.Beautifully photographed, wish it was a larger folio size just so I could see the pictures better. Recipes for mold mixes refer to material and firing descriptions elsewhere in the book. Lots of information, focused on glass. Recommended.

Excellent book! I am new to kiln molding with glass and it really helped me understand how to weigh glass. I've read so many resources that mention that it is necessary to know how much your glass weighs but neglects to mention How to measure weight.I highly recommend this book for also making sense of the different types of glass. It's a getter!

Interesting , somewhat informative. It is a limited subject, and here are only so many formulas for molds, I guess. Felt a little thin on the how to specifics I really need. Very nice photography. More in-depth info, please!

This little book is a nice, fairly technical book with additional resources mentioned that also panned out to be what I was looking for. I wanted something I could refer to for a specific technique and then do more research if necessary - and this book met that requirement. Even carries suggested receipes for mold mixes based on uses. Quite pleased with it and one of those books I read from beginning to end and then placed on the reference shelf.

My husband and I were shopping online for Xmas / Chanukah gifts for our glass-artist son, when we came upon this book. As our son has a BFA in glass and now owns a glass-casting studio, we were looking for a book that would be technically advanced. And this hard-to-find book is. So beautifully written. I felt every word! So relatable as well. I read this book in 4 days, i could not stop reading. I read every chance i had! I also really like how the book is seperated by section. I know whenever I need some advice, i know exactly where to turn. I definitely reccomend this book! I cant wait to purchase her next book “Road Between.”

2.5 Stars.I tried so hard to like it, but it read more like a journal or a diary. It lacked the emotional pull and connection I was looking for.

Actual Rating: 4.5/5I adored this book of poetry.It was sweet and genuine. I found myself smiling, laughing, and tearing up as I read. The vast majority of the poems were pleasant and relatable, but there were some flashes of true genius in Courtney's descriptions that left me speechless.My only criticism (and the reason I knocked off half a star) is that I feel like it got a bit repetitive at times and there were a few cliches that made me wince. Honestly though, all poets are guilty of that, and it did not much effect my overall enjoyment of this book.It was also really nice to read an Own Voices LGBTQ+ book of poetry that focused on love and the normal ups and downs of relationships. Sometimes, it feels like the majority of LGBTQ+ literature involves some sort of strife that rooted in our sexualities. It was nice just to read about a love story for a change. That sort of queer literature is just as important as the stories that focus on coming out etc.I highly recommend it to fans of The Chaos of Longing and milk and honey.

This is an enjoyable book to read. Some of her lines like “Time has no agenda. You can meet someone and love them right away or grow your love over many years. You could have known someone for eternity and they still could not understand your core existence, yet the stranger at the bus stop knows exactly who you are. Time doesn’t mean a thing” could just have easily come from "Aleph" by Paulo Coelho, another favorite author. There are a lot of similar books out there but this one and Rupi Kaur's "Milk and Honey" are the best.

What are poems and beautiful words supposed to make you feel? Connected. Like the strings of your heart are intertwined with the ink on the page. Although at times I feel a bit of something, I can’t relate much to the chapters. The different sections need referring to the table of contents rather than standing out in it's own way.It kind of feels like the author did not pour her own feelings and thoughts into this, but rather snatched other people’s emotions and scribbled them down. Some of the poems feel empty and not strong enough to pull you in with it. It is almost as if she is not feeling the certain emotions she is writing about at the time of writing.I don’t want to be that person that compares but this is no ‘milk & honey’ book for sure. You can tell Rupi Kaur, the author of ‘milk and honey’, really poured her heart and soul to share her experience with her readers, yet this left me feeling blank after several pages.The cover and art is amazing, and I love the black and white aesthetic although it came with a substance wiped on the front (not noticable unless directly under light).

Each poem was thoughtful and moving and an absolute joy to read. It touched my life at a time when I needed it most, so I could not help falling in love with Pillow Thoughts. Peppernell’s writing flows perfectly, and her poetry paints a stunning picture of life’s ups and downs. She eloquently coveys every poem—breathes life into them—and gives them a great amount of depth. These poems are the sort that readers can truly connect with, and each person’s interpretation will be different. They reach into every corner of our hearts and remind us that it is okay for us to feel—gives us a raw and vivid portrayal of what it is to be human.This is a collection that I believe most people will be able to connect with and find meaning in. Every piece is straightforward yet incredibly profound—very accessible for anyone, no matter who they are or where they are in life. I found comfort in these words as they told me that I am not alone, even when I’m feeling lonely in the midst of my troubles. These poems transcend their own simplicity to create a meaningful depiction of the most basic and universal experiences we face in our lives. The reader will find their own unique meaning depending on their personal lives, and take away what their soul is craving at that moment. I look forward to reading more of Peppernell’s work in the future.

I've been going through a rough time, as I have recently been broken up with, and reading these poems made me feel as if I wasn't alone. I hope that when I write my own poetry that I can be half as good as Courtney.

I added this book to my wishlist and received it as a gift. I'm glad I did. It really is a beautiful book. There are about 30 drafts in total. About 13 drafts are for 8 shafts and about 17 are for 4 shafts. The weaving widths are between 32" and 36". It has instructions for the type and color of yarn for each blanket, what sett to use, etc. This would be a great book for a beginner weaver to get started with larger projects without having to weave small samples and not really knowing what works well together to match colors. It would also be good for an experienced weaver who just wants to whip something out quickly without having to plan everything. Very good book.

I have wanted to buy this book by Tom Knisely for a while. It features baby blankets designed to be woven with looms with four shafts or eight shafts. There are several plain weave blankets that can be woven on a rigid heddle loom as well, if pieced. The general information about weaving blankets for babies and young children is excellent. Most of the blankets are woven with cotton yarns. There is a great variety of blanket colors, yarn weights and weave structures. The photography is excellent. Weaving drafts are clear, but otherwise instructions are pretty sparse; although, the instructions are mostly clear and adequate for the projects.

This is an excellent book with examples of different weave structures, color combinations and fibres. If you need hand holding it's here, if you need inspiration it's here. This practical book geared hand weaving book should be in your library. We all have occasion to weave baby blankets, lap robes, seat backs, couch covers, .... a practical book for the practical weaver

Blankets for babies and everyone else in your life. I can't wait to start weaving these patterns. They can be baby blankets, throws, lap blankets..etc. The photography is great, and the instructions are terrific too. Tom Knisely makes weaving fun and easy for beginners and has challenging patterns for more advanced folks. Many patterns for four shaft loom owners..yeah!(also some for eight shaft looms)

I ordered this by mistake, but hung onto it. I only had rigid heddle looms and these patterns are for a 4 or 8 shaft floor loom or table loom I guess. I ended up getting a floor loom and wow! Tom has a delightfully positive way of sharing stories and giving one the courage to try and the easy instructions for beginners or advance weavers are easy to follow. The patterns are gorgeous, lots of color pictures and lots of opportunities to do 2 different blankets on the same warp. They weave up quick and I will be referring to this often to use the patterns for many items. Worth every penny.

Wonderful selection of baby blankets to weave, each done in a different pattern. I just completed 'Windsor's Blanket' (in the book) used exactly the same pattern, except changed the color of the fibers. It was a challenge, as the threading, tie-up, and weaving are not for the beginner, but the end result was absolutely beautiful. Look forward to trying some of the other patterns in the book.

This turned out to be a very nice resource for not only baby blankets but for "grown up" afghans, towels, and even delicate scarves and shawls. There are intriguing color combinations and weave structures along with instructions and hints for good weaving. And all the photos are graced with adorable babies! What's not to love?

Beautifully written, delightful baby pictures. This book should be in every weaver's collection. Inspirational for the seasoned weaver with clear instructions and guidance for beginner and intermediate weavers. Tom Knisely seems to understand the love of hand-woven blankets for babies and for the child in all of us.

Very interesting book. Amazing that this guy survived all through Kursk and the battles around Budapest through the end of the war. I am curious as to how they kept their logistics connection when they wandered through Hungary and Austria. Then the comments about how the Russians took note of the difference in life style from Russia and how they stock piled goods for the return home are right in line with other reports as well as the over blown enemy tanks destroyed reports. Good reading. Would have liked more in depth battle reports from the Russian perspective.

Interesting book. Essentially a lucky man as all survivors were; a German sniper killed a man standing next to him thinking that man was an officer while Bryukov although an officer was dressed as an ordinary soldier. Also he managed to jump out of two tanks destroyed under him. To ensure Bryukov survived the last few months of the war his brigade commander promoted him to the brigade staff, keeping him out of a tank, though he still faced some danger. I give it only 4 starts instead of 5, because two of the last chapters read like the brigade log, since Bryukov was no longer the commander of a tank.

This is a fairly good book from a Soviet author, although this is not the first such book I have read. There seems to be a required plot for Soviet authors on WW2 and this one follows it. Plenty of combat but written so it is hard to tell if this is fact, bad memory, or fiction. Still, lots of combat and a non-German view of the war on the Eastern Front. Not quite up to TANK RIDER but readable.

It was a good account of day to day action until the author moves out of tanks and into a commanding role. Then it's switches to a lot of big picture stuff and no longer tells of the action as first person. Still a good read.

I found this book to be very well written; it is factual, well organized, and detailed. I author is honest in his recounting of his experiences, and shows the reader what World War Two was like not only for the Russian military, but also, for the villagers and Russian people overall.I enjoyed this book a great deal.

Item was as advertised and delivered on time.

Excellent account of what is was like fighting in the Soviet army against the German on the Russian front

It was hard to put the book down! It was very interesting just how hard it was for the Russian soldiers. Canon fodder.

I have been following Dr. Davis and living the Wheat Belly lifestyle for over a year and a half (as of 1/14/17). I've been grain, sugar and potato free for that long as well! I love "Wheat Belly Total Health" is the most comprehensive book that he has out! I've lost close to 130 lbs and reversed my diabetes and SO much more!So, what about "Wheat Belly Slim Guide." I pre-ordered it, read it, and I love it!! It's so small and yet covers so much! It gives you all the essentials that you need to get started as well as a great guide to carry around with you! I pulled it out a few times in the grocery store the other day. Great information! Even which brands to buy on a few items. My guess is that once you read this, get grain free and feel so much better than you ever dreamed possible again, you will want to know more!Great to add to your Wheat Belly library if you already have others too!!

I've been grain-free 2 1/2 years and experience so many health improvements I can't imagine turning back. This is a great short version to pass around to those you find it hard to influence.

This is the perfect resource to hand to anyone who wants a quick and easy guide to get started with the grain/sugar-free lifestyle. I have all of Dr. Davis's books and have been doing this since August 2014, with radically positive results to my health and weight. However, I find that when I try to explain to friends or family how to get started on this, they find it overwhelming. While it's true that it's challenging to have to re-learn what it actually means to have healthy eating habits, it can be done ... and it's worth it. I no longer have food cravings and have kept off the 38 pounds I lost almost 2.5 years now. I no longer suffer from joint pain, flaky skin, IBS symptoms, and Vitamin D deficiency. I'm in my late 50s and my cholesterol and triglyceride levels are better than when I was in my 20s.

At a trip to a local health food store, the owner started talking to me about the Wheat Belly books and Dr. Davis. The concept of giving up wheat and grains was very intriguing and I picked up Wheat Belly Total Health, then the cookbook,v the Detox book and now this Slim Guide. All of the books provide valuable information, some of it overlap's but with each book I get a few new ideas, recipes and tips to navigate this very different lifestyle. I started in November and was completely compliant by mid December. It was the best holiday season I ever had because I got through it with no weight gain, even lost a couple of pounds. But the best part of the lifestyle is the freedom from food cravings. If you are a slave to your hunger and food cravings, these books will be your saving grace. The Slim Guide is great because there are helpful dining out tips as well which the other books don't include. I bought the digital version so I can have it with me on my phone at all times for quick reference. Really great book!

Love this book!! I have all of Dr. Davis wheat belly books and love them all. But, really love this one because it is so easy to read and has some of the best recipes in it. AND I plan to carry it in my purse to answer questions for me when I go shopping! It helps make it so much easier to stay on track!!

Similar to a Paleo diet, going grain free works for me. I dropped 12 pounds in 12 weeks, got my blood sugar to below diabetic levels, and was able to stop taking Nexium for acid-reflux. I've also read "Wheat Belly" by Dr. Davis, but I found the "Wheat Belly Slim Guide" really all I need as a concise yet thorough guide to my grain-free lifestyle.

This is perfect for people just starting this way of life. Highly recommend even if you're not ready for the full program!

I have been a huge fan of the Beatles since I was a kid growing up in the 70s. My Dad had their albums and my Aunt had their singles which allowed me to discover their music on my own. I thought I had read every detail about the Beatles thanks to the plethora of books, articles, papers, interviews, documentaries, etc., about the Fab Four over the decades. So it was a pleasant surprise to discover new details about the revolutionary recording of Revolver. The depth of detail gave me a new appreciation for an album I thought knew so intimately. I have listened to Revolver repeatedly after reading this book as well as sought out cover versions of the songs off the album. I agree that the Revolver sessions saw the Beatles at the height of their power as a cohesive group. It wouldn't be long until the group dynamic would change and each member of the group operated more on their own as they grew older and had different interests. It was also fascinating to read just how involved George Martin was in working with the lads as equals in creating new sounds. You also had the open-minded and willing to push the boundaries assistance from a young Geoff Emerick. Everything came together during those studio sessions that allowed the Beatles to create the greatest album of all-time. I'm talking the British version and not the bastardized American one from Capitol. Rodriguez made the argument that Revolver was superior to Sgt. Pepper even though it was Sgt. Pepper that received all of the critical reviews and praise at that time. Rodriguez makes a persuasive case for Revolver being the most influential, experimental, revolutionary album ever created by the Beatles. Author Robert Rodriguez agrees, and tells the story of one of the band's most cherished albums in "Revolver: How The Beatles Reimagined Rock 'N' Roll."Rodriguez details where the Beatles were in their career in 1966, as they ceased live performances to permit themselves more time in the recording studio. The songwriting collaboration of John Lennon and Paul McCartney was still strong at that point, but Rodriguez also describes what some of the Beatles' contemporaries were doing in 1966 and how songwriters in top groups of the time influenced each other.This book takes the reader through the sequence of songs recorded for the album as well as for the "Paperback Writer/Rain" single, recalling how the album was produced and the creative innovations that the Beatles used to evolve from their earlier material. "Revolver" was released in August, but controversies that the group was facing at that time and other circumstances kept it from selling as many copies and getting all the acclaim that it should have, and Rodriguez mentions these factors when discussing the reception that the album received.Rodriguez closes by comparing "Revolver" to its successor, "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," noting that the latter record had more friendly conditions for getting a favorable reception than did "Revolver." The author contrasts the two albums and makes a strong case for "Revolver" being the superior effort. 1966 was perhaps the best year in rock history, and there is a fascinating month-by-month timeline at the end of the book of the major events in rock that year. This is a wonderfully insightful tale of the Beatles' remarkable and revolutionary album, REVOLVER. Robert Rodriquez claims this is the Beatles' greatest album. He says it's the last time the band was all working together. He also says that SERGEANT PEPPER'S, which many experts consider to be the Beatles best and most revolutionary album was merely a continuation of things they'd already done on REVOLVER. Also, REVOLVER was released in the aftermath of John Lennon's "we're bigger than Jesus" quote, which Rodriguez says hurt reviews of the album in the U.S.Rodriguez puts the album in its time and place, telling where the Beatles were in terms of their career and personal lives. He also gives the reader a sense of the cultural whirlwind of the sixties during which the album was created. And he examines the influence the album had on others such as Brian Wilson and the Byrds.Certainly REVOLVER was a great album, and this book has caused me to appreciate it even more. But RUBBER SOUL remains my favorite album by the Beatles. But I must confess, this is my favorite book on any Beatles' album. It's a great read that Beatle fans will just eat up.
