if your just an archer, this is a boring book, dont buy. but if you like traditional archery, i mean REAL traditional archery, and want to know EVERYTHING about it, this is the book for you.this book contains WAAAYY TOO MUCH information and imo, that is just the right amounteverything about traditional bow construction, history, performance....ect. is in here. which makes me want to read the next 3 volumes even more. i cant fathom there is any more to this black art than what i have already learned from this book, i wait in awe to see what the next volumes bring....this book isint about the old recurve you found in your uncles attic, this book starts at tree selection and what makes one species of wood better than another, to how to specifically fell the tree to make the best bow, to different designs and how they affect performance, to drying, carving, backing, tillering, arrow making, fletching....... did i say everything?? because this book covers EVERYTHING.
These volumes can be expensive... But you get what you pay for, I assure you. The set goes over everything you would need to know. However, you won't fully understand what this book is talking about until you start covering your work space floor with wood shavings. My advice is read the section you want are about to tackle. As you read just know that whatever you don't understand is something you probably won't understand until you get your hands dirty. After you tackle that part of the process, go back and re-read the section. You will have all sorts of little light bulbs going off. This is used more as a reference for bowyering, not a read it once and you are good to go. You will learn something almost every time you read over this.So read it, try it, read it again.These volumes also have extensive sections on different styles of bows and arrows through different era's and cultures. Some of these bows will blow your mind, but also seeing all these different styles helps to build your confidence in making your own bow. There are so many types and styles you feel less likely to screw up, because if your bow doesn't come out the way you wanted it to, it most likely came out in a way that one culture or another used for centuries.If you are serious about wanting to be a bowyer at any level, take the plunge and get the set. You won't regret it.

This is an awesome book that really gets to the heart of what archery really is. It takes the reader beyond the store-bought, high-tech gadgetry that looks and acts more like a rifle than a bow. The essays within, written by a group of traditional bowyers, explores the deep and profound essence of archery by making and using traditional archery gear at home. It opens up new worlds for archers, over and above just climbing a tree and ambushing a deer with space age equipment. It describes a world where archers can reconnect with archery's historical roots, creating a richer and fuller experience and returning hunting back to the realm of fun and enjoyment from the job-like drudgery where hunters are only concerned about the size of a deer's antlers. In the years that I have been shooting traditionally, I have never met a former traditional archer switching to a compound bow; they have all switched away from the gears and pulleys to using more traditional equipment and have never looked back. I would recommend getting the entire series that covers almost every detailed aspect of making and using traditional archery gear, and also contains some historical information about what our ancestors used. It's a great way to really reconnect with nature without having to shell out thousands of dollars to get started, and a much better use of free time than watching ridiculous people on TV act stupidly.
