I've been confused about football since I was a "cheerleader" in the fifth grade, yelling "First and Ten, Let's do it again!" and having no idea what that meant. Fifty-two years later, I'm finally getting it and having fun at the same time, thanks to this book.It's written simply, but doesn't treat the reader like a simpleton. It's organized in a way that is easy to understand, remember, and refer back to which is really helpful. I've only read 1/4 of it but it's already made it easier to follow the games.I have read books "for Dummies" in the past and found the authors' attempts to be clever or funny got in the way of purpose of the book. That is not the case with this book. It has interesting and amusing side stories (like the description of "The Play" where UC Berkeley won the 1982 game against Stanford at that last minute), but this book focuses on teaching the basics.Some of most helpful parts include explaining the jersey numbering (which positions use which numbers), the glossary with descriptions of the positions, plays, color commentator jargon, penalties, and more. Now I know the difference between a running back, corner back, half back, full back, tail back, and a nickle back. I know that a safety is a two-point score and a free safety and a strong safety are both defensive players. I may not remember it all when I'm watching the game but I have my new "football bible" and cheat sheets to jog my memory.If you're new to football or want to know more about the game, I highly recommend this book.
I bought this for my wife so she'd quit asking me questions during the games. It's chock-full of all kinds of football knowledge. Great book for the beginning football fan.
My sister is a huge football fan (might have something to do with football players being good-looking guys). She loves going to games and also watching games on tv, but was still struggling with grasping the finer concepts of the rules of the game. This book has made it much easier for her to understand the game of football. She loves it.
Love Howie Long. I am a football fanatic. My wife is one now thanks to this book. She understand the game and we watch together. I bought this one for my newly married son. He was getting complaint from his bride. I explained to her I would be testing her in a month and she better get a passing grade.
Really useful if you don't know all the rules, calls, positions and plays. However every year the rules are changed. Books like this and other sports should offer an update of rules for 5 years via the internet. I got this book in the earlier version. But should have looked closer, but few changes exccept to the rules.
Very detailed but kinda boring. I got this book so I could try to learn the game while sitting on the sidelines in Jr football so I could talk to my son about games and practice. Sometimes I get my info right and I understand what going on, other times I yell something out that I think I learned from the book and the coaches and other parents look at me like I have 3 heads!!!!
Football for dummies has defined for me the meaning of the commentators' comments during the game. It has brought me up to speed on teams and strategies. I sometimes use it while I'm watching a game. I bought it so I could follow the playoffs and Super Bowl games. I recommend it for people who enjoy watching the game who have never played it.
if you don't know much about football, this book if the best for you. I grow up in a place where American football was not part of my tradition. Now that I'm in america I learned to love this game. This book put me ahead of everybody. I surprised a lot of people with my knowledge of football. Thanks to this great book.
