Jonathan Swift's "A Modest Proposal" is considered one of the greatest satirical works in the English language. Having recently taught this essay to two different groups of students, I can fully appreciate its varied approach to satire (Swift employs many devices, including irony, mock-heroic, and bathos).It's a quick read, but an essential one. This essay was written about the plight of the poor Irish trying to survive under the oppression of 18th Century England, an arrangement where England offered its protection, but in return seized their lands and dried up their resources. Still, Swift's jest points out a flaw that still exists today: the tendency for those who are comfortable to treat the poor like vermin or cattle instead of people.

What can I contribute to what has already been said about Jonathan Swift? A Modest Proposal exposed the harm and horror of the Irish famine - serving up epicurean delights to the rich while serving the modest interests of the poor. If you haven't read this long-ago written work, you are missing the depth of literary art taking on a challenge which ultimately helped produce a national conscience.

A great description of reality.

Most of us, including myself, read "A Modest Proposal" in high school. I decided to purchase a copy of the book, so I could read it again. It's quite an interesting and funny book. I can't even imagine how people of that era took the writing after it was published.

This is a quick read and yet one of the greatest classics of all time. Pick up a copy and read it again or have your kids read it to understand one of the greatest writers of all time.

Everyone has heard of A Modest Proposal. This made it very surprising when I found that the Battle of the Books by Swift is actually much better (it is included in this text). I good, small piece of literature. Worth buying.

Very interesting book for sure. Leonetti takes you deep into the Philly mob during the 1970's and early 1980's heyday. If you really want to get the inside scoop on the Angelo Bruno hit, this is the book. The whole triple-cross is laid out for you. You also get a very flushed out look at Nicky Scarfo. Writing his name alone makes me quiver. If Leonetti's telling the truth, then Scarfo was a total nutcase. To fear him was a very wise—up until his dying day. The only turn-off was Phil Leonetti himself. To me, he never came across as this "Crazy Phil", To me it seemed more like the "crazy" was due to his closeness with his uncle, who was the real crazy. And the further you read, the more he comes across as a rat. Why? Because he starts to blame everything in his life on his uncle, and assumes very little responsibility for his actions.Lastly, the story of Salvie Testa's demise is very sad. He was the most stand up mobster there was and was killed out of jealousy. Toward the end, he knew something was wrong, but wasn't certain who was against him. Put yourself in his shoes, that had to be agonizing. I read elsewhere that Leonetti didn't really like Testa; here, he seems to have loved him—go figure. Overall good read, well worth the money.

Though they don't get the publicity of the guys in New York or Chicago, Philly has its own expert named George Anastasia, who has written the most informative books on the Philly Mob that have or could be written. When I saw this book on the purchase list, I originally passed it up because Anastasia's name wasn't on the list, as the author, but then came back when I became intrigued by Phil Leonetti's story. Here's a CW who actually was better-and who actually WAS rehabilitated-than Salvatore Gravano. And he was telling a story I've wanted to read more than almost any other in OC history? Sign me up!First, the cons: There are none. There, that's over.As a mob scholar who has read something like 80% of the OC books ever written, (probably too high a number, but this is a subject I'm well versed in) I read Leonetti's book-written in his own words-intensively, looking for either self-congratulatory praise (see Underboss, by Gravano and Maas, or Gaspipe by Carlo) or half-assed justification for what he did. Leonetti freely admitted that he was wrong, which took me aback, because this is not something you'll see in mob biographies very often. Leonetti also takes us inside of the mind of the most evil man in the history of the Philly Organization, Nicky Scarfo, and it was a very unsettling experience. You never lose sight of the fact that Leonetti is a bad guy because Leonetti himself doesn't let you.He rarely makes the "I'm sorry I did this" excuse, because that reeks of phoniness, and PL doesn't seem like a phony guy. One of the only times he ever does is the killing of Salvie Testa. When PL talks about Testa, the pain he still feels comes off the page. The killing of Testa is one of the most unreadable paragraphs in organized crime books because the raw emotion is in every letter.His co-authors also do an incredible job of allowing Leonetti space to tell his story while they fill in the gaps. Burnstein and Graziano come off as very expressive and well versed in what I call the "Philadelphia Story." All in all, if you want my opinion-and maybe you don't, but trust me-this is a very, very good book. Most of what Leonetti talks about he's testified to in court. These are backed up by the federal government. If you're going through the reviews and asking "should I read this book?" I give you three words: Nicky Scarfo Unfiltered. Read the book. You won't be sorry.

But Tom Atlantic City,I was fat with many of the characteristic still surprise at how ruthless they were and how involved they were in the casino I industry. The State and the Casino Control Commission were supposed to keep the mobility of the Casino industry. We knew they were involved in construction, but weren't aware of how far it's influence went. A cargo I feed was a psychopath and I think he is dead now.Glad he got what he deserved.

I had been waiting years for this dude to finally get a book out as I knew he had been such an insider to the Scarfo-face for so long. Having read so many other books about these Philadelphia scoundrels, unfortunately there was little new here for me other than some incidental really not important 'inside stuff' about the Scarface that I pretty much already either knew, or suspected (like that he thought killing was the answer to almost everything). One thing about the book I don't totally buy which is that this particular guy who was so clearly so ruthless, could have turned around as he describes to that extent and so quickly. That part I don't think is totally authentic.

I'm a sucker for anything about organized crime: fiction, non-fiction, movies, documentaries, etc. as such I enjoyed this book but at times felt overwhelmed by "details." The back and forth between Leonetti's narrative and the facts of each incident described made for enhanced understanding but the seemingly endless names of people involved got tedious at times. All-in-all it's an interesting first person look at the Mob. Read it if you're a fan of gangster literature!

Great book. Very honest and fair account. Doesn’t glorify instead gives straight forward look inside a family led by a sick and demented boss. Four stars because starts of slow with (necessary) background.

Too many bios get too technical, or are written like a thesis. Mafia Prince is just plain Ol' good story telling. Great combination of narration and context. One of the best mob books out there.

Probably the best mob book I have ever read. You can clearly see how a normal boy was raised with the intention of turning him into a psychopath. Phil Leonetti never had a chance to be normal and he explains how he developed his twisted view of right and wrong

It's really 3.5 for me.After reading Catch Me, I was impressed with the book, especially with the connection to Gardner's other characters like Pierce & Kimberley Quincy, Roan Griffin, and even J.T Dillon and Tess Williams. So, I decided to read the first book of the FBI Profiler series.The Perfect Husband is about a young woman named Tess Williams and Marine turned Merc named J.T Dillon. Tess was once married too a man named Jim Beckett, who seemed like "The Perfect Husband" at first. A handsome police officer who never hit her and took her away from her abusive father and married her. But then he started becoming psychologically abusive. He killed at least ten women before being taken down by Tess and going to prison. Now he's out and has set his sights on Tess, to finish off what he started. J.T Dillon is a drunken mess. He is reluctant to help Tess at first but eventually gives in. He and his sister, FBI Agent Marion MacAllister have a lot of unresolved personal baggage, mainly involving their father and somewhat involving J.T's wife, Rachel and adopted son Teddy. Meanwhile Special Agent Pierce Quincy is working with the Massachusetts authorities to help in the manhunt to find Jim Beckett, but will Jim get his revenge, or will Tess and J.T be ready to taken on mad methodical psychopath.A crucial note: This is book marked a transition of genres for Lisa Gardner, and it is evidently clear in the amount of sex. There is nothing wrong with that, but some of it kind of feels like distraction when it's supposed to character development. Three of the key characters are very traumatized to the point where they act irrationally. It can be annoying, but also understandable. Sometimes victims of trauma aren't rational people.As for positives, I can honestly say that I did like it when the pace picked up now and then and got exiting. The climax is a memorable one, but some might say that the last line spoken by [SPOILER] might sound a little corny.Overall, I give it a 3.5. I think that Pierce Quincy was an interesting character (I see Hotch from Criminal Minds) and that Jim Beckett is a memorable villain, but a lot of the times, the pacing feels kind of slow, but there was a lot of really good backstory for many of the principal characters. You might get emotional by the end of this. I know I did.

Not Gardner's best work. I'm a big fan of hers, but I think the characters were just a little bit dumb. That creates a lot of frustration when reading because at some points you just roll your eyes.Spoilers from now on.Ok, shouldn't Tess have moved out of state to really elude her ex instead of moving around from Massachusetts town to Ma town? I mean seriously, the state is not that big. What about Montana or Wyoming? She obviously had plenty of cash....And Marion's death was totally unnecessary and we are supposed to believe that Tess held Jim off longer than Marion? I guess it's fiction. And somehow the FBI never listened to the prison calls???? Seriously? You have to be joking... The portrayal of women in this book was frustrating and at times infuriating. I'm so glad her writing has improved in her later works, but I would not recommend this book.

I've read many books by Lisa Gardner. She's one of my favorite thriller authors. This early book of hers shows the elements of her writing -- interesting characters and plot twists -- but not the finesse that distinguishes her later books. The attempts at romance and sex are clunky and unbelievable. The pacing is a bit slow. The mystery is painfully convoluted and the ending was implausible and not really solved by police work.There are also very strong elements, particularly her ability to draw intriguing characters quickly, but these characters carried so much baggage it became burdensome to the story.As the story opens Rainie, a relatively new police officer, is on patrol with an officer trainee when they get the call there's been a school shooting in their small town. Three people are dead and the murderer seems obvious -- but not all the evidence matches up. When state and federal detectives show up, Rainie must fight not only the killer and her neighbors but the officials who want to push her off the investigation.I enjoyed this book but if it had been the first one I'd read by the author I probably wouldn't have picked up another one.

This is Gardner’s first book involving Rainy Conner and Pierce Quincy. The book takes you on a roller coaster ride from a school shooting to a past killing. An unexpected climax. It’s a hard book to put down. Actually any of Gardner’s books are very hard to put down.

The author writes well although I'm not keen on the plot. It is not really a mystery story more a horror, romance and soft porn combination. I wish the author could come up with a clever mystery plot with was slightly more realistic. I'm not going to read any more of this authors work.

This book made me a die-hard Lisa Gardner fan. As I’m about to embark on my eighth Lisa Gardner novel, I have to think back to the book that started it all.“The Perfect Husband” is a book you can’t put down because you won’t be able to get the story out of your head. The premise of the story is so immediately captivating that, as I’ve described it to friends, I've always gotten a chorus of “Oohs” which has inevitably resulted in one of more of them telling me later they’re in the middle of devouring the book.The best thing about Ms. Gardner’s writing is that (unlike most suspense authors) she doesn’t stick to the same cookie-cutter pattern in her stories. “The Perfect Husband” is certainly no exception to Ms. Gardner's "keep 'em guessing" approach. This story takes the reader on a rollercoaster ride of knuckle-biting plot twists that are guaranteed to raise the calmest reader’s pulse rate.Do yourself a favor and read this book.

I purchased this for my 6 year old for a school assignment. Not only did he love it but I did as well. I wasn't born when Neil Armstrong landed on the moon and although I knew he was the first man to walk on the moon, I'm embarrassed to say I never took the time to learn about his life. Together my son and I learn so much about Neil Armstrong! I highly recommend this book. I look forward to reading others in the series.

One of two books on Neil Armstrong which I ordered for my grandson for a school project on astronauts. He found it very helpful in providing background information on Armstrong, and found the book clear enough for his elementary grade level to extract information to include in the project.

I chose this rate because I liked it but did not give me all the information I needed my last question .What was the date when this book got published? I asked this question because I am doing an biography!Thank you for writing this book!!!

My son really enjoyed this book. The whole series is wonderful as he has read several of them, but who doesn't like learning more about Neil Armstrong. It has really made him understand more about the man and the moon mission. This one in particular was fun for him because he is fascinated by outer space. It helped him want to learn more about the moon and solar system.

I bought these for my third grade classroom. They are great for the biography genre and then to use for report writing. The three years I've used them so far the kids LOVED them. Easy for their reading levels, informative, and people they have heard of in their lives. They would read their own and then read other that they had heard of. Could have left these books out 1/2 year and they would have still been reading them.

Great book. My som read it several times. It is very informative. Teaches you a lot about Niel Armstrongs life and goes into a bit of detail about the moon landing.

Excellent series of books we plan on trying to buy as many of this collection as possible. It is perfect for children readers who are looking to learn about historical people, places or events. It breaks it down in an informative but digestible amount for the young reader.

Most kids like these type of books especially ones that ask a lot of questions. Easy to read and follow. Will be ordering more of these type of books in the future.

Nearly 15 years ago Ms. Thwaites participated in a research project exploring glass casting methods, for the Royal College of Art. The results of that project became a CD, "Mixing with the Best," which was quietly passed around glass casting circles for years and remains bloody difficult to find.I'll bet that if you asked 100 casters how to cast glass, you'd receive 90 different (and sometimes conflicting) answers. There are so many variables in glass casting that, as another reviewer said, it is not a matter of following a fixed set of rules. Rather, successful glass casting requires a deep understanding of the role each component plays in the outcome, and how to adjust them to achieve the desired result.Thwaite's book does a good job of explaining this, extending that excellent CD with more contemporary examples. She offers recipes for refractory mixes, shows how some of the best in the craft develop their work, and suggests firing schedules and processes for different types of work.Above all, it's an entertaining read. I've been casting for many years, and it still gives me ideas every time I open it. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the casting of glass.

This is the best mould making book I have come across. The information is very technical and allows a greater understanding as to why we use different materials and gives it from a scientific perspective. I have been casting glass for a few years now and have always been taught that you mix plaster and silica, but without a lot of answers about why certain people use one ratio over another not to mention the additives and what ratio you use those in. This book explains the differences between alpha a beta plasters as well as how the particle size of the materials help (or hinder) in the strength of a mould. I plan to use this book in future classes with students that are seriously interested in classes.

Mould Making for Glass (Glass Handbooks)This a great book. I have studied glass all over the world, and none of the classes I took went into so much detail about what the different ingredients in a mould do. Most instructors simply teach - "this what I do" and not "this is why I do what I do." The reason the WHY is important is that if you are interested in developing your own techniques or run into material variations, for example that plaster of paris is different in Australia than it is in the United States, with this book you can look at the research for similar problems and find your solutions rather than just taking a shot in the dark and adding things that you think might help. It is a great book and is going to be my holiday gift of choice for all the glass casters in my life. I was so excited reading this book I couldn't put it down.

Excellent book!However, if you have any qualms about UK centric descriptions and measurements, you may wish to find a British friend to 'splain it to you. My biggest problem has been finding American equivalent products with differing trade names; not really a problem at all.Beautifully photographed, wish it was a larger folio size just so I could see the pictures better. Recipes for mold mixes refer to material and firing descriptions elsewhere in the book. Lots of information, focused on glass. Recommended.

Excellent book! I am new to kiln molding with glass and it really helped me understand how to weigh glass. I've read so many resources that mention that it is necessary to know how much your glass weighs but neglects to mention How to measure weight.I highly recommend this book for also making sense of the different types of glass. It's a getter!

Interesting , somewhat informative. It is a limited subject, and here are only so many formulas for molds, I guess. Felt a little thin on the how to specifics I really need. Very nice photography. More in-depth info, please!

This little book is a nice, fairly technical book with additional resources mentioned that also panned out to be what I was looking for. I wanted something I could refer to for a specific technique and then do more research if necessary - and this book met that requirement. Even carries suggested receipes for mold mixes based on uses. Quite pleased with it and one of those books I read from beginning to end and then placed on the reference shelf.

My husband and I were shopping online for Xmas / Chanukah gifts for our glass-artist son, when we came upon this book. As our son has a BFA in glass and now owns a glass-casting studio, we were looking for a book that would be technically advanced. And this hard-to-find book is. Not for beginners, but a great book for the already knowledgeable.

So beautifully written. I felt every word! So relatable as well. I read this book in 4 days, i could not stop reading. I read every chance i had! I also really like how the book is seperated by section. I know whenever I need some advice, i know exactly where to turn. I definitely reccomend this book! I cant wait to purchase her next book “Road Between.”

2.5 Stars.I tried so hard to like it, but it read more like a journal or a diary. It lacked the emotional pull and connection I was looking for.

Actual Rating: 4.5/5I adored this book of poetry.It was sweet and genuine. I found myself smiling, laughing, and tearing up as I read. The vast majority of the poems were pleasant and relatable, but there were some flashes of true genius in Courtney's descriptions that left me speechless.My only criticism (and the reason I knocked off half a star) is that I feel like it got a bit repetitive at times and there were a few cliches that made me wince. Honestly though, all poets are guilty of that, and it did not much effect my overall enjoyment of this book.It was also really nice to read an Own Voices LGBTQ+ book of poetry that focused on love and the normal ups and downs of relationships. Sometimes, it feels like the majority of LGBTQ+ literature involves some sort of strife that rooted in our sexualities. It was nice just to read about a love story for a change. That sort of queer literature is just as important as the stories that focus on coming out etc.I highly recommend it to fans of The Chaos of Longing and milk and honey.

This is an enjoyable book to read. Some of her lines like “Time has no agenda. You can meet someone and love them right away or grow your love over many years. You could have known someone for eternity and they still could not understand your core existence, yet the stranger at the bus stop knows exactly who you are. Time doesn’t mean a thing” could just have easily come from "Aleph" by Paulo Coelho, another favorite author. There are a lot of similar books out there but this one and Rupi Kaur's "Milk and Honey" are the best.

What are poems and beautiful words supposed to make you feel? Connected. Like the strings of your heart are intertwined with the ink on the page. Although at times I feel a bit of something, I can’t relate much to the chapters. The different sections need referring to the table of contents rather than standing out in it's own way.It kind of feels like the author did not pour her own feelings and thoughts into this, but rather snatched other people’s emotions and scribbled them down. Some of the poems feel empty and not strong enough to pull you in with it. It is almost as if she is not feeling the certain emotions she is writing about at the time of writing.I don’t want to be that person that compares but this is no ‘milk & honey’ book for sure. You can tell Rupi Kaur, the author of ‘milk and honey’, really poured her heart and soul to share her experience with her readers, yet this left me feeling blank after several pages.The cover and art is amazing, and I love the black and white aesthetic although it came with a substance wiped on the front (not noticable unless directly under light).

Each poem was thoughtful and moving and an absolute joy to read. It touched my life at a time when I needed it most, so I could not help falling in love with Pillow Thoughts. Peppernell’s writing flows perfectly, and her poetry paints a stunning picture of life’s ups and downs. She eloquently coveys every poem—breathes life into them—and gives them a great amount of depth. These poems are the sort that readers can truly connect with, and each person’s interpretation will be different. They reach into every corner of our hearts and remind us that it is okay for us to feel—gives us a raw and vivid portrayal of what it is to be human.This is a collection that I believe most people will be able to connect with and find meaning in. Every piece is straightforward yet incredibly profound—very accessible for anyone, no matter who they are or where they are in life. I found comfort in these words as they told me that I am not alone, even when I’m feeling lonely in the midst of my troubles. These poems transcend their own simplicity to create a meaningful depiction of the most basic and universal experiences we face in our lives. The reader will find their own unique meaning depending on their personal lives, and take away what their soul is craving at that moment. I look forward to reading more of Peppernell’s work in the future.

I've been going through a rough time, as I have recently been broken up with, and reading these poems made me feel as if I wasn't alone. I hope that when I write my own poetry that I can be half as good as Courtney.
