This book makes Harper Lee and the iconic, TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, not only accessible, but relatable to young children. I thought I knew the whole story of both, but I was so wrong. As an adult who has read TKAM many times, I learned a LOT reading this book. I love that it can be used with older children too. My son is in 7th grade and will read TKAM next semester. He's more excited now that he knows some of the backstory - of the story and the author. Highly recommended!

My daughter devoured this book and it spurred a dynamic conversation about Harper Lee's life and legacy. In addition to the interesting backstory and life details, the writing is clean and punchy—a true pleasure to read. The illustrations compliment the text perfectly and I look forward to many re-reads. This would make a great teaching tool within the classroom as well.

This biography is a wonderful look at Harper Lee’s life. It’s very accessible, and the illustrations bring the story to life! Deeply researched, and well-written! It’s one of my favorite children’s biographies. It belongs in every school and library!

The illustrations are amazing!! I will buy this book again just to look at them. My kids loved it!

This lovely and charming book made my ten year old want to read To Kill a Mockingbird, and he had so many questions as we read this wonderful biography. It's a perfect introduction not only to Harper Lee and her novel but also to civil rights and being a spitfire who fights against injustice. An entirely worthwhile read!

I loved this peek into the life of Harper Lee. I never knew how much she was just like her character, Scout. My kids have never read To Kill A Mockingbird, and they still enjoyed this book. They loved reading how, "She embraced dungaree overalls, scampering up trees and rolling in tires..." Yay for spitfires!

I'm willing to give this one three stars because you really do get an amazing amount of material for the price. There isn't anything else in the language learning market where you get so much bang for your buck.That said, Living Language Hebrew isn't getting more than three stars because when I buy something that is basically a small DIY textbook series for learning another language, I expect it to be properly edited.There are a number of misspellings, gender mismatches (obvious ones, like using a male verb conjugation with the subject women) and other mistakes that could really throw a beginner for a loop. I'm using this as a supplement for other language learning tools so I was able to spot the issues as they arose without too much headache, but it really is that bad.There are also exercises where they never bothered to check anything before sending it to the printers. "Listen to the audio and choose the correct..." this exercise only works if they've recorded the audio. Or having a mix and match with 10 questions and only 6 answers when every answer is different.I'm more than a little disappointed, to the point where I've put the Intermediate book down in disgust, 1/2 way through. I'll eventually finish the series but not with the same set schedule I was following.Despite the massive shortcomings of this product, I actually would recommend it given the bang for your buck aspect. Just don't follow this series as your only source of instruction, and if you question whether or not something is correct, your instincts may well be right. For future languages, especially reviewing those I once spoke well, I would not hesitate to purchase other languages from this same line, even with the knowledge that they may share the same faults. The audio is clear, loud enough, and mostly adequate for your needs. The topics covered in the first book are revisited in the second book (much to my annoyance) but explored in additional detail. I can't speak for the advanced book as I'm not there yet. So far, it seems like the revisiting of different subject groups (daily life, school, work, etc) also serves to test your memory in vocabulary of the previous book.In short: There are better products on the market, and there are worse. There are cheaper products on the market, and some that are far more expensive. Living Language has found a niche in the middle of those 4 and fills it well, though their attention to detail is lacking. Supplement with free online resources and you're well on your way to learning a new language!

I bought this course with some misgivings (I ordered it before it was released), because there was no copy available for me to examine -- but when I received it, I was blown away. This is a WONDERFUL course!As it says in the listing, you get NINE CDs and three books (Essential, Intermediate, and Advanced levels). But the listing says there are 464 pages, which is wrong. The three books put together total a whopping 1,276 pages, and cover the language in depth. It's not just lists of words and expressions to memorize, either. They explain in clear and simple terms how to create your own sentences, to express your own thoughts.Best of all, there is plenty of practice material, all with answer keys so you can check and correct any mistakes. That's vital when you're studying on your own.I'm so impressed by the new Living Language series, and the incredibly low price, that I will be acquiring more languages to add to my collection.

This is an excellent package for self-study; I have found it useful to study the book(s) at home and listen to the CDs in the car (study the books before listening or the CDs won't make sense!).My one complaint, and it's minor, is that the Hebrew printed in the books is in light blue and approximately 10-point type, which makes the nikud (vowel points) almost illegible without magnification! At very least volume One, 'Essential', which is for absolute beginners, should have the printing larger and in black!Otherwise this course is modestly priced for all it contains, and the books and CD's intelligently planned and well-produced. Absolutely no complaints about the content; I would highly recommend it, along with the use of a hand-held magnifier!

The first thing I noticed when I received my copy of Living Language’s Hebrew course was the sheer volume of materials I got for such a low price. As you can see in the pictures I have uploaded, you will receive three textbooks and 9 CDs. When I purchased this set, I thought that the 3 “textbooks” might be thin books that don’t cover much material and was just clever marketing. I was WRONG. Each book is the size of a typical textbook (the Intermediate book in the set is a bit of a monster in itself). Not to be defined only by quantity, however, Living Language adds quality to the mix. The audio tracks are professionally recorded and the speakers are natives. The audio covers most of each book, which is a breath of fresh air after going through other language courses whose audio support was sparse. Also, the texts themselves are quite good as each lesson introduces new vocabulary, grammar, and dialogue. It also re-uses and continues to build on past lessons so that the student doesn’t forget what he/she has already learned. All Hebrew writing is written in the Hebrew alphabet (with vowels), a Romanized version of the language (aka – English letters), and, of course, includes a translation into English. Some purists may argue that this hinders real language acquisition as the student may choose to use the Romanized Hebrew as a crutch – just keep in mind that the Advanced book uses only the Hebrew alphabet (with vowels) and the English translation.PROS-Great introduction to the language- Value for money cannot be beat; the volume of materials included is impressive- Audio is of very good quality and covers much of the book-The audio itself includes the Hebrew and English versions of the text. This means that you can use it on the go, without the need for the book to be present.- Short vowels are included in all texts.-There is a very handy reference section in the back of each book that covers everything from verb conjugation in all the tenses to the printed and cursive versions of the Hebrew alphabet.- Living Language has a FREE online component for their courses. This is very helpful for learning vocabulary when you don’t want to go fetch the book. Heck, you can go online right now and try a lesson or two just to see if Hebrew is right for you!CONS- No glossary included in the book- Some purists may believe that Romanized language learning (as opposed to reading and writing in the native alphabet) can be hindering. Of course, the student can always ignore this and focus on the Hebrew aleph bet if they want a challenge.Overall, I highly recommend this course. It is perfect for those of us who study at home as it combines a strong group of textbooks with good, comprehensive audio.

Thousands of Iberian Jews were forced to convert to Christianity in the late 15th century, and while many assimilated, others clung to earlier customs?including dietary edicts. Gitlitz and Davidson report trial testimonies in which crypto-Jews?those who secretly struggled to maintain their Jewish identity and customs?were betrayed by what they ate, what they wouldn't eat and how their food was prepared. Recipes reconstructed for today's kitchens include dishes such as Isabel Gonzalez's Eggplant and Onion Stew and Blanca Ramierez's Meatball Stew. Another revealing dish is Radishes and Stuffed Crop, skin from chicken necks stuffed with radishes and herbs. Many meals reflect a fondness for the sweetness of honey and the savory blend of herbs and spices. They range from Mayor Gonzalez's Cold White Lamb Casserole, made with rose water, cinnamon and almond milk, to five different matzas, including one with mashed chestnuts. The "secret Jews" are the Iberian Jews who were forcibly converted to Catholicism under the Spanish Inquisition but still maintained Jewish religious practices in the privacy of their homes. Since this was strictly forbidden, the courts devoted a lot of time to ferreting out the "secret Jews," using the testimony of neighbors, servants, and family members. The authors, specialists in Spanish history and culture, have written a meticulously researched scholarly work focusing on this aspect of the Inquisition, using a variety of primary sources but relying mostly on the testimony of those questioned and often sentenced to imprisonment or worse. From these sources, they have re-created dozens of medieval recipes. While their efforts to discover and preserve this aspect of Jewish heritage are laudable, perhaps the idea of a cookbook was misguided. A recipe headnote that concludes "Maria went to the stake on November 20, 1486" is unlikely to make many readers feel like making Maria Sanchez's Greens. I came across this in the shelves the other day and was mesmerized. David Gitlitz and Linda Kay Davidson are a husband and wife team and teachers at the the University of Rhode Island. David is a past winner of the 1996 National Jewish Book Award, and he is a specialist in aljamas (jewish neighborhoods), the converso/crypto Jews, the anusim (forced converts) and the meshumadim (willing coverts). Using cookbooks and Inquisition documents in Spanish, Portuguese and Catalan (including the rare 13th Century Al Andalus cookbook of the Cocina Hispano-Magribi), the authors have recreating over 90 recipes of the Converso jewish community. During the Inquisitions in the Iberian peninsula, Jews and Moslems were killed, exiled, or converted. Some of the converted remained Jewish or Moslem and became Crypto-Jews, Crypto-Moslems, or Conversos. Spain expelled Jews in 1492 (you know, when Columbus sailed the Ocean Blue); Portugal expelled Jews in 1497. The recipes are well categorized, and make use of lamb, beef, fish, eggplant, greens, turnips, chickpeas, as well as mace, cinnamon, ginger, lavender, rue, portulaca, and dozens of other spices. Most recipes include histories and characters of the period, which is the prime motivation to purchase this book. She was arrested in 1505 for this crime. There is also Juan de Teva's Roast Lamb dish. Juan's father was a rabbi who was burned to death i n1484. The authors also include the Roast Chicken with Fruit and Almori recipe of Anton de Montoro. Senor de Montoro was a rag merchat in Cordoba, but is most well known as being the converso poet to the Court of Queen Isabel of Castile. De Montoro was accused of preparing stuffed radishes (a Jewish dish) and Pollo Judio (jewish chicken). Easily, this is among the top three Jewish Cookbooks of the year.

I was excited when I first heard about this book, but when I got a copy, I was quite disappointed.First the good... the recipes produce tasty dishes.But they are not the recipes of Spain's Jews, secret or public.These are recipes invented by the authors with a minimum of supporting evidence, or, in fact, most of the time, none at all.They are based for the most part on the testimony of people who turned in Conversos for being "secrect Jews". The mere mention of, oh, say, chick peas and honey, has led the authors to invent a recipe that includes these ingredients.If you are truly interested in the history the food eaten by Spain's Jews, you will not learn much. If you want some nice Spainish-style recipes eaten by Jews, you'll probably do better skipping the sad tales of betrayal and torture and buying a modern Sephardic cookbook.

One of the ways I became pretty certain that my family were of Spanish-Jewish origin was an outline of their eating habits. I had heard that if one ate or prepared various foods, or omitted others, it could be used as evidence against him or her at an Inquisition trial. A Drizzle of Honey could have served as a map of my grandmother's kitchen, and I had some intensely personal reading experiences.My grandmother, for example, prepared the fairly unpopular vegetable, Swiss Chard, at least once, if not two times, a week and I linked it to the fact that Swiss Chard was one of those foods that could incriminate one as a crypto Jew. From among the Swiss Chard recipes in the book, I found to my delight that one is a version of a dish my grandmother regularly cooked.The strongest points of this work are the usability of the recipes and the commentary--a history, in fact--accompanying them. The recipes are clear and "followable," unlike some found in similar cookbooks, that is, cookbooks that claim to resuscitate an ancient cusine in the present-day idiom but cause you to find yourself searching for arcane ingredients through mail-order houses that no longer exist. All recipes are "doable."But it is more than a cookbook--it is a history book, bringing readers into close, personal contact with actual historical figures through their Inquisition testimony, or the testimony of their accusers. It was particularly chilling for me to read, knowing that my forbears could easily have been among the "criminals." These recipes honor their original authors by assuming their names, a personal touch that links readers to a tasteful tradition composed of distinctive individuals whose stories finally get told through what they cooked.Addendum: Since I wrote this review, I have had my DNA tested, and learned that I was correct in my assumptions about my family's crypto-Jewish origins. I have more Jewish DNA than any other ethnicity. Learning this has made this book even more special to me than it had been before.

This is a well researched book with many interesting recipes and historical comments by reputable scholars. I was looking forward to a celebration of the rich interchange between the Jewish, Catholic and Moorish communities of Spain experienced for centuries on end. Jewish consciousness permeates much of Spanish culture from Alfonso El Sabio, to Teresa of Avila etc. That is what I was looking for: something which would be a means of understanding and bridge-building.I am sad to say that beginning with the first sentence on the dust cover there is a fixation on the victimhood of Jews in Spain. Rather than celebrating a wonderful interweaving of cultures the book chose to reinforce age-old prejudices. It is one more example of a centuries old tradition that tars the Christian Spaniards with the brush of persecution and perpetuates the myth of "Black Spain".

Love it and am currently cooking a feast out of it.

I purchased this book after I went on a healing vacation and experienced an Ayahuasca ceremony for the first time. It helped me make sense of all I had went through and helped me understand things. If you are thinking about going on an Ayahuasca journey, this is the book for you- Excellent book!

This in depth guide to ayahuasca is a remarkable and much needed addition to the existing literature and accounts on ayahuasca currently available. This second edition also adds a beautiful and important two chapters on sustaining awareness of safety and responsible medicine use - which completes an already seemingly complete guidebook on ayahuasca usage!I have probably read all or almost all of the books available on the topic of ayahuasca over the past 7 years. While there have been a few excellent books, most of them are focused on adventures of seekers, personal accounts and experiential reports, with a couple of books focused on the study of the Amazonian world view. This is not a bad thing, but I have been waiting for something more and this book provides it. It brings a much needed depth for the serious seeker, looking to approach ayahuasca ceremonies for deep healing. It is a guide on all things ayahuasca related, but its strength lies in its focus on the suggested mental, spiritual and emotional preparation and approach to working with this extraordinary sacrament.The book is quite personal in places, offering what he found to be the most helpful for his own unfolding and inner work. If someone, born and raised in western society, is going to approach this medicine for deep healing of wounds and the malaise of common western thought patterns, some of the popular approaches to ayahuasca and shamanism in general can at times be slightly limiting, in my opinion. Regueiro’s work adds a fresh outlook, building upon indigenous wisdom by utilizing sometimes Jungian and non-dual approaches in dealing with our fractures and wounds. In my own inner work, I have found these approaches incredibly beneficial and wholesome, so this book really resonates with me. This does not mean that this book discards all conventional wisdom as built up through the ages in the amazon, but rather adds to it in a very meaningful way, and re-frames many of the methods and myths surrounding the use of it to be rather approachable. There is also an explicit invitation to use one’s own discernment and intuition regarding what is “right” for the individual, which I find highly appealing as it avoids an authoritarian view.In a nutshell, this is the one of the only books I would recommend someone read before embarking on their first ayahuasca ceremony, and in my opinion, it is a book that everyone currently working with sacred plants should consider reading for a review of what their current work is bringing them. Very important work and much needed at this juncture in time!

I bought the audio book version which is somewhat unpleasant to listen to due to bass tones of the narrator’s voice, which my excellent speakers don’t reproduce very well, creating a painful low boom. I got used to it now, and listen to this book without enthusiasm just to finish it.The book is written in the kind of generalized new agey language that uses a lot of general ideas like “responsibility”, “facing your fears”, “trust yourself” etc, and has few concrete details. This book doesn’t provide a lot of important details and information to someone who wants to try ayahuasca for the first time. The lack of concrete descriptions and details makes me question the author, his authority on the subject and experience with it. He could be just any guy from a Spanish speaking country who is somewhat familiar with ayahuasca, but far from being an expert. He also doesn’t strike me as someone who benefited a lot from this “healing plant medicine”. Again, this is judging by his generalized insights and lack of originality in his thinking and ideas.

I had the pleasure of meeting Javier Regueiro last year in a Manhattan bookstore where he signed my copy of his book and then delivered the most fascinating and mesmerizing lecture/discussion I have ever witnessed by an author. He was so clear and so present and non-judgmental and good-humored.His book is beautifully written and highly informative. Unfortunately (and this seems almost petty to bring up) there are several spelling, grammatical and typographical errors, none of which, happily, detract from the otherwise excellent writing.By the way, the cover art by Harry Chavez cannot help but catch your eye, as will the photograph on the back of the author beaming a radiant and welcoming smile.

I loved this personal, honest, down-to-earth account of the spiritual benefits, and trappings, of ayahuasca medicine work. Javier is honest, forthright and helpful in this book. I highly recommend adding this to your ayahuasca reading list if you're exploring this plant and working with it. Also look for his book on San Pedro/Huachuma if you're working or going to be working with that Andean plant master.

This book is deeply insightful on so many levels. It's rich with transformational, liberating ideas that really rocked my inner world. He lays the foundation for truly meeting the plant medicine of Ayahausca with your eyes and heart open, well prepared and able to receive the most possible from the experience. Beyond the medicine, Javier is a brilliant teacher who has permanently affected how I view the world and myself in it. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! And his other book too :) I have both with lots of pencil underlines and notes in the margin :)
