Friedman is perhaps best know to the general public for his vigorous defense of free market economics and limited government political philosophy. Within the academic world, however, Friedman is known for his economic theory of monetarism. Here Friedman again assumes the role of popular educator, but now does so to explain the nature and importance of currency. Friedman challenges the way most people think of money, indeed destroys some things most would take for granted. Money is, first and foremost, a social construct, and the value and usefulness of money can be enhanced or eroded as people gain or lose trust in a currency. Most of the book is a straightforward explanation of the nature of currency and the history of money - particularly in the United States. But Friedman does deviate from this basic purpose for a single chapter as he delves into some of the nitty gritty details of monetary economics. It's a chapter that, by his own admission, can and perhaps should be skipped by those lacking a firm grasp of economics, though its inclusion is worthy for those with some background in economics who still retain illusions about the nature of money.

After having read the reviews, I was looking forward to a great classic book. I was somewhat underwhelmed. Lot of story telling.. full of jargon.. historical events and concepts did not seem to weave in coherently. I got through but as I said.. was underwhelmed. Could have skipped this one :)

Broadly an interesting and educational book about money as economists see it. Unfortunately, this book spends far too much time discussing bi-metalism and the role of silver, something that feels, to the modern reader, dated and dull.

Milton Friedman covers a number of interesting episodes of monetary history in this book. The episode about the bimetallic money system the U.S. had until the 1870s is really fascinating. Also the discussion of inflation and the incentive the government may have to use inflation to finance spending is very relevant to our current day problems of growing national debt and federal budget deficit. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about money and its history.

I am a beginning student of economics. I have a general sense of how and why things work, but I am by no means an expert. I bought this book because I wanted to understand more about monetary policy. I now understand more about monetary policy. So, I am very satisfied in that respect. Of course, the book leaves me with a lot of questions, but I think that is probably an accurate reflection of the world at large.As the title indicates, I never would have thought that a book on monetary policy would be so interesting. I mean-come on-monetary policy...not exactly a thrill a minute subject. But, Dr. Friedman's genius is that he links the nuts and bolts of monetary theory to a story-showing how and why things went the way they did-and most importantly, showing why monetary policy is SO critical. As with "Capitalism and Freedom" Dr. Friedman explains difficult concepts to the common person without watering them down-and without talking down to them.I would NOT recommend this book as a starting point for a study of economics. If that is what you are considering-better start somewhere else and come back here. But, if you have a basic background in economics PLEASE read this book.

By "challenging" I do not mean that this book challenged my beliefs or that I disagreed with it; I mean that I found parts of chapters 2 and 3 hard to understand at first and had to re-read them before I felt I was on solid ground. This is not a first book on Economics; it's a serious treatise on monetary theory and history. Chapter 4 is a technical "what if" scenario looking back at our silver policy; some readers may want to skip it, as the author suggests. I found later chapters perfectly understandable.(For an easier read on general Economics I recommend Basic Economics 4th Ed: A Common Sense Guide to the Economy (excellent!) and From Here to Economy: A Shortcut to Economic Literacy --those books have no equations or charts. They are for everybody, as their titles suggest.)I learned a lot, a great feeling. This also reinforced things I learned from Basic Economics. If you decide that you can't "hang in there," I urge you to at least include the brilliant five-page epilogue in your reading before giving up; it should be within the grasp of most readers.Just as shortages and surpluses are always price phenomena, "Inflation is always and everywhere a monetary phenomenon." We've known that for over a thousand years. So why do authorities keep bungling monetary policy? See the epilogue.

Milton Friedman has cleared up the question for me as to "What is money?" It is whatever a nation wants it to be. Some like gold, some like silver, and now ours likes printed "greenbacks". Friedman outlines the positives and negatives of each standard and gives us a hint of where a nation might end up if they print too much "money". It may not be a new book, but there are more than a few politicians that need to study this book to understand what they are voting for or against!

Every time I tried to check out this book at our local library, I was put on the waiting list for it to return. I got tired waiting to read the book, so I checked Amazon.com, and sure enough, it was available at a really good price. The book is boring at the start, but as you get into the text , you could see through the mist to find an amazing treatise on world fiscal policy. This book should be required reading by all.

If you weren’t a friend of Allen Ginsberg’s, you weren’t a Beat, Morgan says, which means that the first Beat, Lucien Carr, was never a writer. Carr’s good looks attracted Columbia freshman Ginsberg, not yet a self-accepting homosexual, and his affability led him to introduce Ginsberg to William Burroughs and Jack Kerouac, the other essential Beats. The basic trio pulled other aspiring authors as well as artists, thieves, and con men into their ambit as, during 1944–59, all the trials, travels, and travail that eventuated in the three holy books of Beat—Ginsberg’s Howl and Other Poems, Kerouac’s On the Road, and Burroughs’ Naked Lunch—transpired, Gregory Corso and Gary Snyder became second-tier Beats (Snyder proved crucial because, while never involved in the others’ sexual and pharmaceutical adventures, he set the example for Ginsberg’s very influential later turns toward Buddhism and ecology), and Kerouac separated himself via the bottle. The dynamics of the three main writers of the Beat Generation, Allen Ginsburg, William Burroughs and Jack Kerouac is explored in one of the best overall views of writers and artists that shaped America in the 1950's and 60's. The three are the main thrust of the book, but not the only perspectives in this book. I have read several biographies of the Beats and think this is a comprehensive book. It brings people like Lucien Carr and Diana Di Prima into a generation of writers. It is more a historical account of what transformed several friends into an art movement. Ginsburg emerges as the hero of the Beats. He is a catalyst in organizing and promoting, not just his writing, but several of the other writers. The journeys of Kerouac and Burroughs are lengthy, dark and well chronicled by Morgan. There is a telling tale at the end of the book and somewhat opinionated by the author that the three main writers were somewhat hypocritical and exceedingly self-centered, which is true, but what they contributed is documented in a good read.

Tremendous reading. Best beatnick book ever. A must read if one is a beat lover. Simple, enjoyable and thorough. A must read.

I have read better books than this dealing with the same subject matter - and I have also read a good deal worse books. The thing I did find refreshing was calling the Beats out on their many peccadillos. And the dismissive way that the main members of the "Beat Generation" treated the women in their lives. Some of the material felt recycled by the end of the book. However, it's a great start for the novices.

Ego-centric, Seinfeld-like characters: boring and lazy people. The book is a boring tale of the beginning of the "me" generation.

Any book on the beats is bound to generate strong opinions on every aspect of the movement, excluding only the most undeniable facts (yes, Burroughs shot his wife in Mexico while playing William Tell; yes, J. Edgar Hoover thought the beats to be "one of the three greatest threats to American security," along with communists and "eggheads.") When did the Beat movement end? Kerouac thought the late 40s; some think it's still going. Who are the beats? Synder? Some say absolutely not, others say absolutely yes. Who wrote well and who didn't? Norman Mailer and Truman Capote crossed swords over that one, and people have been fencing ever since. If you are of the generation which produced the beats, or the one immediately following (as I am), tempers may flare even stronger.This book is a very enjoyable overview of the movement, concentrating on basic biographical details and choice bits of literary gossip. Unlike the subtitle, the history is not complete (is a history ever?) nor is it particularly shocking, given lives and times that followed. Morgan is in a special position to write such a book, given his impressive credentials as editor and archivist. Certain topics may be of particular interest: the position of women in the movement, for example, or the tormented life and politics of the later Kerouac, whose seminal On the Road reached its 50th birthday a few years back, (or the depiction of the highly underrated artistic ferment of the 40s and 50s which led to so much later.)The book follows a year-by-year format, discussing the activities of each "beat" during that period. We follow the vicissitudes of Burroughs, Ginsberg, Corso, Snyder, Kerouac, and others as they experience everything from yage to strict zen training to Buckley's Firing Line. At times the chronology is a little hidden (now just which year was this?) but an attentive reading clears the matter up. Analysis and criticism are at a minimum; the overview would preclude any in-depth discussion of literary merits or dissections, all of which are found in abundance elsewhere. By its communal approach, the book takes a position on the group as a whole: yes, it was a closely knit circle and Ginsberg was the driving force. The reader may disagree on this and everything else, but the point of view is a well-documented one.I met Ginsberg at a book-signing session in Laguna Beach shortly after his Collected Poems was published. He was older than when I last saw him at the Human Be-In and no longer dressed in white. "What do you do to afford this book?" he asked as he drew a flower, stars, sun, and moon in my hardback copy. I told him about my career as a composer and teacher and mentioned my student days at Berkeley. He asked about Seymour Shifrin, the distinguished composer who had been a classmate of his at Columbia. I told him briefly about my life-long compositional struggles and he listened attentively. As I left he said, "one has to break out of those chains." That remark has stayed with me ever since.I recommend The Typewriter is Holy as an entertaining, brief survey of one of the more remarkable currents in American arts. If you want to know more about Burroughs as psychotherapist or the origin of the collaboration "And the Hippos Were Boiled in Their Tanks," this is the book for you.

Author Bill Morgan explains in the Introduction that his intent is to construct a chronology of the "Beats" following the model of Susan Cheever's American Bloomsbury: Louisa May Alcott, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Margaret Fuller, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Henry David Thoreau: Their Lives, Their Loves, Their Work. The plan is to show that the Beats, like the Transendentalists, had a major impact in changes in society and American thought.The chronology of what they did, where they traveled and when their works were written/published shows Alan Ginsburg as central to the group. While Ginsburg's centrality may be a matter of opinion, the book shows him at the heart of intra-group communication; He is always writing, visiting and encouraging his circle of friends. Ginzburg is constantly promoting Beat poetry, prose and people and seems to be the only one (outside of Gary Snyder who is mostly hiking in the woods or in a monastery in Japan) sober enough to do so.Morgan clearly loves and admires the Beats. He credits them with leading everything from the post-war societal changes to the development of the video montage. While Morgan does a good job of piecing together Beat chronology and demonstrating the centrality of Ginsburg, he doesn't meet his goal of showing how society was changed by the Beats. He shows that Ginsburg was a father of free form poetry and that Kerouac was a pioneer of the narrator/conversational novel and that Lawrence Ferlinghetti took a big risk that resulted in a landmark ruling on behalf of free speech, but the Beats' role in the larger societal changes is not well drawn. The last chapter discusses the Beats as a catalyst, but the same can be said for many other forces or issues of the times.Ironically, another point the book does prove is a quote from Beats detractor Richard Kimball (p. xiii) "They were drug-abusing sexual predators and infantilized narcissists..." The behavior of Jack Kerouac and Neal Cassidy towards their respective spouses and children is appalling and pales only to that of William Burroughs. Only Gary Snyder seems to be somewhat drug/alcohol be free. The Beats seem to be living in a state of perpetual childhood. They either can't or won't have paying jobs and if they don't participate in theft, they seem to find it acceptable. While some of them made great art, by and large, they appear to be the ultimate free-loaders.I recently saw Howl, a 2010 film covering the poem, its obscenity trial and Ginsburg's early life. It would have been best to have read this before rather than after. The film treats Ginsburg's romantic relationships in a much different way than they are shown in this book.This is a good contribution to the study of the Beats and their work. It's author has an interesting background as something like a free lance archivist for artists which, in itself, earns my respect.

Teach Yourself VISUALLY Access 2010 (Teach Yourself VISUALLY (Tech))I have average computer skills and I've used the "Visual" books before--and this one is a great one. And here's the reason why. It's like having a tutor over your shoulder guiding you every step of the way. Each step is numbered and marked on a picture of your screen--in color. Every chapter is clear and concise and very easy to follow. Like I said, the tutor is with you all the way. The Microsoft Press books are also very good and I also use these, but I prefer the "Visual" books. They just seem easier for me to understand at my skill level. I've been using computers since 1985 at the corporate and personal level, so I do have some experience.

I purchased several books trying to learn Access beginning in the year 2000, and attended two seminars and did not learn how to use Access, now after all that time and expense that problem is over; I started using Visually Access 2010 and after only a couple of weeks of study I was able to use my software. After all I am a senior person, and that for me is a great lesson in, " An old dog can learn new tricks".Access offers a great method of keeping a list of contacts and keeping a record of personal or business information. The information is able to be sorted in a variety of catagories.It is a must for personal or business record keeping because it is right at the computer without having to look through a paper file. There are many uses for Access and it makes life so easy. A friend is teaching Word to GED students by using this same series so I decided to give it a try as I needed something basic and easy. This book is basic, but far from easy. The lessons jump around, starting with things as simple as how to x out of a program and then in the next step asking you to begin entering information in to a form you have yet to learn how to create or design. Whats more, the information they request you enter does not appear for another two pages. After flipping back and forth trying to keep up with what I'm doing and why, I am no closer to understanding how to create even a simple database. I'm not a fan of the Dummies books, but I may have to borrow a copy from the library to supplement this book.

I am only sorry that I discovered these "Teach Yourself Visually" books after I graduated! I have a B.A. in Economics and a major in math, so I'm no dummy, but I find that these "Visual" learning books are a really quick and effective way to learn, and a great supplement or substitute for your usual textbook-like instruction manuals. My computer-programmer boyfriend looked through this book and said he might read it to brush up! I have bought every TYV book I could possibly use, and have found all of them to be helpful. They cover pretty advanced techniques and topics in the most simple way possible, and are very concise without sacrificing clarity. Recommend.

Love these "Visually" how to books. Have been using them for years. Quick info, detailed "screen shots". Have them for Word, Access, Excel, Power Point, Windows 7, Windows Vista, AND Windows 10 is on order as I write. Actually quicker than surfing through the Office community pages, and other sources looking for answers from other users or surfing the entire Microsoft website looking for an answer to your question(s). GREAT tools! I highly recommend them all.

The pictures are nice and the layout makes it easy to find exactly what function you want to find. But, it jumps right in and says things like "Open the design view" and goes on to show a function but does not say which database you are to open the design view from! I'm five chapters in and giving up. There are no exercises to follow along with, just examples of how the different commands look if you know which database to open to begin with. I'm looking for something else!

I was recommended the Teach Yourself Visually book by a friend.I am computer savvy. I know all Microsoft office products but I needed a little more help with Access.This book would be so much better if it came with data files to help you. Otherwise, you have to create everything. It is very time consuming and it does not make my life any easier.

Not as good as I originally believed it to be. Ok for those are familiar with most of the Access functions and have worked with the program regularly in the past. But NOT for the beginner as some of the reviews claim...

This is a superb book if you are interested in dealing with cats in a humane, effective manner. I took two cat behaviour courses and the information in this book is more helpful and realistic. It also presents a better way to deal with a cat’s unwanted behaviours. I have been involved in cat rescue for five years, I learned more by reading this book.

Wow. Just - wow. A game changer of a book. As someone who’s always had an affinity for cats, has volunteered in shelters and lived with one amazing rescued feline after another I never paid much attention to “how to understand your cat” books because I didn’t think I needed them - I just paid attention to the cat/s at hand. But Jackson Galaxy eloquently explains an overall compassionate relationship between cats and humans that is the basis for everything else we have to learn/do regarding our feline companions. This isn’t simply a book about how to “solve” your cat’s peeing problem -it’s about the fundamental nature of cats and how humans can embrace that nature for our mutual benefit. And this is such a graceful, compassionate,non-judgemental advocate for all those unloved shelter cats! Actually, I take that back - I don’t think there can be any unloved shelter cats as long as Jackson is out there. This book should be put into the hands of anyone embarking on a relationship with a cat: especially new adopters and anyone working in a shelter. Really, really, really well done.

Jackson Galaxy is amazing! My cat is a different animal since I’ve been following Jackson’s lead about how I should communicate and respond to my kitty! She used to be very aggressive towards me when I would pick her up or try to let her at certain times of the day. Starting with the *slow blink*, my husband and I learned some cat language and realized we have been missing so many cues that our cat was trying to tell us! We are just their guardians and not their masters! Lily now respects and loves us! She comes to us when we call her! She responds to letting in a positive way! I think the best part of reading this book is the better understanding and connection I have made with my kitty. Realizing that as a pet owner (I like to think of our role more like a cat caretaker) I can do better, and then seeing a happier animal is so rewarding. I initially looked for what I hoped would be a litter box solution and came out of reading this book a more educated cat-person, and some new ideas to work with the litter box aversion. Even if you don't have any specific problems, this is worth the read. I appreciated the raw cat descriptions, understanding more about basic cat instict helps us interpret domestic kitty behavior and I am so glad Jackson brings this to light throughout each chapter. Wow. Every single person who has a cat, or is thinking of getting a cat - this is a MUST read. I feel like I’m reading Positive Personality Profiling but for felines instead of humans.So many resourceful tips that totally make sense!Suggestion, read it start to finish. I bought this for improper urination issues and found it to be overwhelming how many places there is mention of urinating issues so just began reading start to finish and it made it much easier than trying to get everything in a quick reference. Although cliche, I honestly could not put this book down. Larson masterfully weaves facts, dialogue, and vivid descriptions to create a documentary-like experience of a haunting chapter in weather history. Morals and themes emerge from the book throughout, creating feelings of shock, anger, and at times, disbelief in the reader. As the storm approaches Galveston, the suspense is as great as any popular adventure or horror film, and the lives affected seem like close acquaintances after Larson's insightful characterizations. In short, a powerful read underscored by the impacting credibility of nonfiction.

I don't need to repeat the story-line here as other reviewers have done so. All I can add is that this book, especially when it gets to the storm itself and its incredible impact, held me spellbound. Larson is brilliant at presenting history as it can be: remarkable stories that are not a long list of "name/place/date" but an exploration of situation, connections, character, emotion, outcomes - fact, not fiction, with sources noted, of course - that draw one in and keep one immersed through to end. After reading a "history" by another author (different subject entirely) I longed for Larson's exploration of same, knowing that I would care more, remember more, and understand the connections that drive events more than the endless drivel of who begat whom, etc.(often only good for source material, it seems). Imagine what Larson's writings on the French Revolution, St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre, the Boer War - oh, anything - would be. He takes an event and builds the world around that event - and one leaves his arena with a deeper understanding of the world he explores than few others can or do provide.

Issac's Storm brought home to me the destructive power of a hurricane and the fact that we are blessed today by superb forecasting technology and tracking of storms. Living by the Gulf of Mexico, I am always anxious when a storm of any kind, is forecasted by the National weather services, and our local weather people. I have lived through several category 1 storms. I built my house to withstand up to a category 4 storm and possibly a category 5. I would not sit out a storm forecasted at a 2 or higher.In the case of Issac's storm in 1900, that hit Galveston, Texas, it was estimated to be close to a category 5. at that time the National Weather Service was a budding and infant service dependent on oral relays of information from ships at sea or island in the Caribbean, specifically Cuba and other smaller Islands. Ship to shore telegraph was still too new to be of help leaving word of mouth by the sea captains. once information was obtained about a gathering storm, appropriate warnings were supposed to be communicated to the residents of the probable impact sites.Unfortunately, politics always comes into play especially with a budding service whose reputation was at risk and its confidence by the public and the need for funding. The National Weather Service had weather reporting stations at storm vulnerable locations throughout the United States and representatives were constantly communicating barometric, temperature and wind calculations to the Weather Service's headquarters in Washington. Because of both politics and funding issues the word "hurricane" was forbidden to be communicated because of the variable shifts in weather fronts.Forecasting was more of an art than a scientific prediction. The weather chief in Galveston was both and educated weather person as well as being a physician. His name was Issac Cline and he sensed the coming storm but was on delicate territory in expressing the need for greater danger to the residents of Galveston whose topography was only about five feet above sea level and while local politicians talked about a sea wall because of previous storms, the idea was put into a bureaucratic filing drawer.Erik Larson lays out a compelling story based on his usual and extensive research and puts the reader into the minds of the characters in the book, which were all real people. The reader will feel the growing tensions of the arriving storm and feel the wind, rain and flood ofGalveston. The reader will feel pity for Issac Cline and disgust for his bosses in Washington DC.Normally because of our up to the minute forecasting and tracking of hurricanes we feel great comfort and have the time and ability to prepare and evacuate if necessary. The number of casualties and deaths as described by Larson are shocking and good and bad of humanity is clearly demonstrated. lIn those days they did not "name" storms and I suppose the author named it Issac's storm because of his responsibility as a employee of the National Weather Bureau and the amount of personal blame that would be open to public criticism. The book was well written and I highly recommend it to those who enjoy history presented, as Larson so skillfully does in each of his works. I do not hesitate to award five stars to this work.

I loved Devil in the White City by Erik Larson, but was disappointed by In The Garden of Beasts and Thunderstruck. I seem to have been on a weather disaster kick for a while, so I ordered Isaac's Storm. This is one of those books that is so good, you don't want it to end--in fact, when I finished it, I started reading it again immediately. The research, the intrigue, the drama---way better than a novel for me, because this all happened. In the two other Erik Larson books I mentioned, it appears he got bogged down in the details of one of the dual plots and though you knew they were related to each other, by the time you got to the end, you didn't much care about the people involved. In Isaac's Storm, you'll even care about the prelude to the hurricane of raining frogs. Usually, when I "loan" a book to somebody, I don't care much if I get it back or not. This one has my name in it!

However, although in the past they have provided updates at no additional charge even if purchased from Amazon, this year they are indicating that the updates are only free if you purchase the text directly from them. This is contrary from what their literature says. Going forward, I will not purchase this text via Amazon should I choose to buy the text.

It is a fine reference. But, I had hoped for more on the 2018 changes. There is not much material about them in this book. As such, this book did not meet my needs.

For me, the diaries were the best part. Yes, we all know that Scott was ill-prepared and sometimes almost delusional. Still, the author's constant bashing of Scott (and of Britain) wore thin quickly. I began to skip his nagging commentary and just read the diaries. I mean, how many times do we have to hear that Scott was stupid?

Best way to prepare is to ask the people who live in cold climate on the best way to do things. Was he smarter than the Eskimo.
