The 2nd edition proved very useful for my last Newfoundland trip, so I bought the just-published 3rd edition for my next trip. But when I opened the book I discovered a major publishing error: the two-page map of Gros Morne National Park, one of Newfoundland's most important destinations, is missing. A map of a different park appears in its place. A few weeks after I informed Frommer's, they sent me a PDF version of the missing map. They also said they'd post it to the "updates" section of their web site, but as of June 2008 it still isn't there.So, one star to Frommer's for their error and their failure to correct it months after learning of it. But five stars to Andrew Hempstead for the rest of the content, which is at least as good as that in the 2nd edition. Too bad he was let down by his publisher. If you're the kind of person who doesn't mind a Maine guidebook missing a map of Acadia National Park or an Arizona guidebook missing a map of the Grand Canyon area, feel free to purchase this.

Very well written. Just got through reviewing the trip planned for us by Maxxim Vacations. Will be very useful as we follow the itinerary they booked for us. Useful information. Great advice for getting the most out of the trip.

A combination of this book and the stuff I received directly from Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism helped me to plan our trip for this coming summer down to the minute (literally.) I found hotels, b&b's, ferries, historic spots, even restaurants, all with remarks that let me know things like how much time to schedule to tour somewhere to which room to ask for at a B&B.NL is not an easy place to plan to visit - it takes a lot to get there (whether driving or flying) and there aren't many resources available to research well ahead of time. Online isn't too bad - but because most of what you find is run by the business/location itself, there are only going to be positive reviews; and many places don't list their prices on their websites.Frommer's are always reliable; this one specifically was a real help.I also recommend reading some other books about Newfoundland before going - the usual "The Shipping News" and "Theater of Fish."

I just purchased a copy of the Frommer's Newfoundland and Labrador guide book. Frommer's still hasn't fixed the map error on page 178-179. It still shows a map of Terra Nova National Park instead of Gros Morne National Park. And Frommer's still hasn't posted a corrected map in the updates section of their website. I was going to request a corrected copy via their website, but they wanted too much personal information to submit a request. I didn't want to be spammed with junk email and snail mail. I give Frommer's a big fat F in customer service.

I recently spent three weeks travelling around Newfoundland and constantly referred to this book. It has lots of handy information eg we were looking for the walking track to Steady Brook Falls and in the book it told us the track stated behind the Tim Hortons; we would never have found it otherwise. A very useful guide book.

Excellent coverage of the areas in and outside of St. John, Good tips for Gros Morne National Park (Rocky Harbor), the northern peninsula, and the Irish Loop. I would expect similar results from the other areas that we did not visit.The background information for each of the areas was just right.On the whole a comprehensive and reliable reference.

Wow, can't believe I never reviewed this book before -- it's terrific in giving you an overview for Newfoundland. I did find that because the tourism and travel industry is updating so fast you need to supplement it with some online research. But overall it's a good guide to discovering the hidden treasures on the Rock. Newfoundland residents know how to not only be greateful but may be the rolemodels for sharing -- it was a fabulous Trip in 2006.

If you have any love for Scotland and men in kilts, run the other way. This is a Dick and Jane version of a Highland romance with simplistic dialogue, one-dimensional characters, a silly plot, and the most sorry sex scenes I have ever come across.“Oh, Alex, I am so happy! I like this! What do you want me to do?” She kept moving up and down ... Can we do this again?""I love you, too, Alex. But right now, I have more important things to do. Your son wants out."When you are either wincing or laughing out loud during what are supposed to be the tender moments, you know there is a problem. Although the vocabularly is at a very basic level, the subject material is not for the elementary set. Maybe this could provide comic relief in an adult ESL class.

I was looking for a light book to read and typically like historical romances. This was one of the worst historical romances I think I've ever met.The dialogue was juvenile and stilted and half the time made you cringe. The heroine was meant to be construed as strong and perfect in a thousand ways, but she came off as a simpering child. The hero wasn't anything to write home about.A few things that were annoying:The heroine endures torture at the hands of her stepbrother and the man she's supposed to marry and automatically she assumes all men are horrible monsters. She'd spent most of her life surrounded by people who cared for her, how could ALL of that be undone by her wimp of a stepbrother? It was such a glaring plot device that was meant to instill distrust in her so our trusty hero could ride in and fix all of her problems.On that note, the hero was supposed to be deep and understanding, but he was constantly yelling at her for ridiculous things. And it was so uncomfortable because he'd start his sentence in a normal tone, and then in four words was suddenly yelling? His yelling wasn't even the worst part about him. When they were getting intimate, it felt like he was coercing her into letting him touch her/undress her, which was incredibly uncomfortable. He kept telling her that if they were ever going to have a successful wedding night, she needed to let him touch her. It wasn't romantic in the least.And when it did come to their wedding night, it was one of the most awkward scenes ever, not to mention the fact that in the middle of sex she had a weird conversation with the ghost of her mother. How much more awkward could the scene get?I recommend skipping this one for your own good.

The entire read of this book was just painful. It is by far the worst book I have ever read.The author should have taken time to study the language and mannerisms from this time period before ever attempting a Scottish Highlander book.This is absolutely my favorite genre of book to read. Let me give you some pointers for your next book.1. Lairds NEVER say please. They are commanding, strong and respected. Their clan do as they are commanded. Every time the Laird said "do this or that 'Please', I wanted to scream. This grated on my nerves like you would not believe.2. The language was extremely painful to read. There were so many references of things they would never have said. Modern day terms. Just because you put no' for not once or twice or aye instead of yes does not mean you have mastered the language. Modern day language and terms are NOT for this type of book. They would have never said the word rape, they would have never used half the terms she used in this book.3. The sex scenes were atrocious at best. If this is a reflection of this author's personal experience, I am very very sad for them. I have great sympathy for women who have been violated and I mean no disrespect, but every time the screamed and ran away, I wanted to throw my kindle through the air. I was so frustrated. They were not written well at all, they were awkward, horribly cumbersome and just plain bad.4. The direct terms of his body parts.... oh my god. Really? Has this author ever read a romance novel before? Penis and testicles? How about shaft, rod, hardness or a half dozen other terms? Which I find quite ironic that she got some of the female body parts accurate.5. While we are on body parts, did you really have to mention the afterbirth? Yes, as women we all know it happens, but seriously, it has NO NO NO place in a romance novel. If you had any hope of making a good book you blew every chance you had with that one scene.6. Let's talk about contradiction next. In one moment she is stating how she can never touch a man, be married because of her rape, but the moment she sees him she is all hot and bothered. One moment she is saying she can't talk about her "secrets" and the next paragraph she is spilling her guts. One moment she is hot and bothered, the next moment she is swearing off men to join a convent. BTW, that would have NO children for her to tend after, no matter how many times she says it. 30 chapters of this stuff. WOW... talk about fluffing a book!7. Names: You really should research your historical names. UGH.8. Why was he yelling at her constantly? Or in some places at all? I mean out of the blue, normal conversations he YELLS. what the heck?There is just too much that went wrong with this book. It failed from chapter 1, and got worse. Like the brother could sneak up past all the mean just as she was giving birth, spilling his whole reasoning he was a tyrant, jumping to his death. Her "courage" and "heroism" all unbelievable and fake. The characters did not mesh well at all. Gushing over her drawings.. her "talents"...If there was anything good about the book, the brothers and older sister were likable. The little sister was not cute and got on my nerves.

Tough to review. There's no doubt this is a fantastic book. Beautifully written, palpable characters, fantastic backdrop. I can see why it's recieved so many accolades.But all that said, I didn't find it enjoyable to read.It took a while to figure out why. Even while reading it I'm thinking to myself "This is so good", but at the same time wondering why I'm bored and looking forward to the next book.Finally I think I nailed it. Nothing really happens. It's all set in amongst the background of a lot happening, but other than hearing about it, there's not much that really goes on with the characters that so much time has been spent making us love.This feels like all the parts of a fantastic book that happen BETWEEN the major plot points.I spent the majority of this book waiting for something to happen, and when it doesn't it feels like there no payoff for the time invested in these characters.Maybe this is what literary fiction is about. I can see why people may like it. It's life through the eyes of others.But books are a form of entertainment. This wasn't entertaining to me, and I couldn't wait to start a new book.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough! It has quickly become one of my absolute favorite books...it's truly captivating and well written.Call me old-fashioned, but I used to love browsing bookstores in person, and the rise of the internet has made it all too easy to find and purchase subpar (albeit popular) books. There are so many entertainment alternatives that many truly great stories go under the radar...until it's announced that they'll be made into a movie (in fact, many read like screenplays, as if the author anticipates that's where the paycheck is). And yes, the characters and the interwoven storyline and the dramatic WWII backdrop could make for a blockbuster hit.But. This is a book you really should read, and relish. (I read this on my kindle and hid the progress percentage because I didn't want it to end.) Doerr writes with absolutely beautiful imagery. It's emotional and vivid and earnest. A wonderful reminder that books were written to provide a unique insight into how others think, and feel, and live, and love.

The writer is obviously a very talented storyteller who devoted a considerable period of time to writing this novel (10 years). It is quite vivid in detail. Those who like literary fiction will enjoy it immensely. Those who like a story that is plot-driven, not so much. I kept reading, because I wanted to see it to the end, but at any time, I could have put this book down. I kept checking to see how many pages I had left to wade through. Not a good sign. I never really connected to the characters, particularly Werner, who played his one string of homesickness for all it was worth. I think the story would have worked much better if it had been arranged in chronological order. All the flashbacks at the beginning were distracting. Frankly--irritating--particularly when they occurred during a "present" scene, when the reader was quite unwilling dragged away from the action for a lengthy flashback. The flashbacks were also confusing (time-wise), since the book was written entirely in present tense. Dates were posted before the chapters, but they were hard to keep in mind when everything was happening right now. One last word on detail before closing. This book is RICH in detail. The problem, for me--and you may come away with an entirely different take on this--reviews are only opinions, after all--was finding a detail that would stick with me. The story was just too busy--noisy--for me to pick up something that resonated personally. If you boil away all the detail, what are you left with here? A somewhat improbable, and disappointedly brief, intersection in the lives of two persons that apparently had no lasting effect on either. I need more from a story than that to enjoy it. But other readers will come away with an entirely different experience.

It has been a while since I have found a book that I wanted to read slowly so that I could soak in every detail in hopes that the last page seems to never come.When reading the synopsis of this novel, I never imagined that I would feel so connected to a book where one of the main characters is blind and the other a brilliant young German orphan who was chosen to attend a brutal military academy under Hitler's power using his innate engineering skills.This novel was so much more than the above states. The idiosyncrasies of each individual character are so well defined and expressed in such ways that come across the page almost lyrically. I was invited into the pages and could not only imagine the atmosphere, but all of my senses were collectively enticed from the very first page until the last.I was so amazed with the way that the author was able to heighten all my senses in a way that I felt like I knew what it was like to be blind. The descriptives were so beautifully intricate that I could imagine the atmosphere through touch and sound. It was amazing, really.There were so many different aspects of the book that are lived out in separate moments and in different countries that find a way to unite in the end. What impressed me most was that I could have never predicted the outcome. It was as though all cliches were off the table and real life was set in motion. Life outside of books can be very messy and the author stayed true to life but in a magical and symbolic way.I have said in other reviews that just when I think that I have read my last book centered around the Second World War, another seems to pop up. I should emphasize that this book created an image of war in a way that I have never imagined before. I truly got a sense of what it must have been like for children who lived a happy life and then suddenly were on curfew and barely had food to eat. It also showed the side of young children who are basically brainwashed by Nazi leaders and made into animals who seem to make choices that they normally wouldn't in order to survive. And by survive, I mean dodging severe abuse by their own colleagues.This book may haunt me for some time. I can't express enough how beautifully written the pages are. I highly recommend this read as it is my favorite so far for 2014.

I have collected GBP cookbooks almost from the beginning and may have almost all their comb-bound books. This one, "Church Potluck Favorites" is not one of their better ones, IMO. So disappointing!! These are not recipes I have typically seen in my 50+ years at church dinners, potlucks, and gatherings. Maybe the problem is more in the TITLE of this collection of recipes. (A marketing miss???). I was expecting more appetizers, casseroles, breads, and desserts...those dishes that carry and present well. Nothing wrong with spinach and cabbage, I like those vegetables, but every other recipe had spinach, cabbage, or artichokes in it. There is a large section of soup recipes, nice recipes...but soups are not what is typically brought to potluck dinners. There were a few pages of bread recipes stuck in the back of the "Soup Suppers" section. There are a few "potluck" recipes thrown in, but not enough to recommend under this title. Maybe after all these years with so many wonderful GBP cookbooks, it's just getting harder to find those great recipes that haven't already been included in one.

I used three of the recipes right off the bat for Easter. There is a good variety of easy-to-moderate fuss recipes that I am sure I will use in the future, and for those I don't, I still enjoyed reading them.

I love making recipes from scratch and this book has a bunch I can't wait to try out. They bring back a lot of memories of homecoming at my church. The illustrations are too cute.

Don't buy this cookbook, binding is so cheaply made it separates pages from binding every time it's opened!! So dissapointed, I can't give it as a gift now!

Love this series of books, not very complicated or time-consuming for the most part.
