I think in general this guide is as the author states for the "Sunday hiker" (as in Sunday driver) but it could be considerably better.It does indeed give serviceable descriptions of a number of wonderful hikes in the mountains ringing the Tucson basin so it does accomplish its basic purpose and likely is best targeted to the first time or infrequent visitor to the region who wants to explore. I think even for that purpose I would provide these criticisms:1. The descriptions of the hikes are inconsistent. Where most of the descriptions are useful, there are at least two hikes (Bug Spring Trail and Mt Lemmon to Catalina State Park) whose descriptions are written in an entirely different first person style that more accurately describes the adventures/misadventures of a given group of hikers than does it provide a general description of the hiking trails and the routes these trails take as would be useful to the general reader.2. The facsimiles of the topographic maps are crudely copied with the trails "inked in" perhaps with a magic marker. Although the original topographic maps doubtless are of high quality, these reproduced portions are not. Nowhere does the author acknowledge the source of these maps as far as I can tell.3. The photographs that illustrate the hike descriptions may be blurry or their subjects obscured or off center.4. The author provides a bibliography of "selected reading" that lacks in reference to guides that may have informed her guide and hiking choices and that might indeed be of use to persons wanting more detail of hikes. In particular, "Trail Guide to the Santa Catalina Mountains" by Eber Glendening and Pete Cowgill might be a useful reference for additional hikes in the Santa Catalina Mountains.In sum, I think this guide is serviceable to the Tucson newcomer, but the next edition could benefit from a few upgrades!

Most of the hikes in this book are fairly long - over 3 miles - and the information on difficulty is not set up in an easy-to-interpret way for a parent on the move. We bought several hiking guides for our recent Tucson vacation, but we only ended up using this one once - and even then, it wasn't for the full hike as described in the book. If you are a local, or are going on an extended vacation and like to walk long trails, then this could be a great book for you. It does list a couple of trails that were not in any of our other guides, and has a fair amount of detail about each one. I don't doubt that if you wanted to do these treks it would be an excellent resource. However, if you are wanting shorter hikes that can be easily done with young kids, I recommend choosing a different book.

This guide is amazing, I'm new to hiking and was limited with what material I initialy could find to help me persue my new hobbie in my area and after some research I purchased this book.The author of this book did an amazing job to get as much detail and information about the trails written about, she also give such great background and history of the trails that if you were not a hiker but happened to pick this book up and read a little you would be compelled to start hiking!Overall this book is just amazing and covers all you need to know to get you out there and enjoying the trails in the Tucson area, not sure I would have stuck with the idea of hiking and thoroughly enjoying it as much as I have been had it not been for this book.

Great descriptions of the more popular trails in the Tucson area. Gives great insight for what to expect. Would love more expansion on the Sabino Canyon trails

This series of hiking guide is good for basic info on the hike, how to locate the trail head, and choosing an appropriate hike. However, I recommend talking to locals that you find on the hikes to assist finding the most appropriate hike for your desire & fitness level, etc., especially to exchange info, once you have some experience. That said, this guide series is very consistent, hike-to-hike. Start with an easy hike, especially if you are new to desert hiking, and build your way up the list.

The maps aren't very good in this book.

Great book - gives interesting details and things to watch out for on dozens of trails throughout the Tucson area. Don't hike without it!

Ignore the inane, negative reviews. This is a brilliant, meticulous analysis linking the dependence of capitalism on fossil fuels, beginning with the coal-fired steam engines in early era of Industrial Revolution. What's fascinating is that capitalists rejected "the flow"--that is, the water-wheel--after discovering that it didn't allow for the control and concentration of necessary human labor. Also fascinating are the earlier models of cooperative communities bound together by renewable water energy in Islamic Spain, for example, that stand in dramatic contrast to the competitive, exploitative, fossil fuel-driven capitalist society emerging in 19C Britain, which Malm discusses. This book should be read by everyone who wants to understand why we need system change if climate catastrophe is to be averted. This book should be widely read.

At times dense and pedantic, but full of useful information and makes a very important argument. A good resource for anyone interested in the connection between fossil fuels and capitalism.

This is a good account of the transition to fossil fuel industrialization with a prime focus on England where the potential of steam technology first burst on the scene. In the view here one of the prime drivers here was the issue of superior control of labor rather than the simple economics of coal. The accelerated process of factory production has developed so rapidly in two centuries even as we take for granted a transformation that is beckoning to be undone or replaced and whose social implications derive the logic of a revolutionary endgame. The tragic nature of the capitalist consolidation of labor and industry is reaching its concluding act five and the outcome is thwarted by the ideological hypnosis of the Industrial Revolution and its consequences for finance, labor, class, and...the health of a planet threatened with ecocide.

Very good treatise of the tension between capitalism and fossil fuel caused greenhouse gas emission debacle. I subtracted one star due to the very tedious chapters in the middle of the book, which really do not add much to the narrative and you can skip them once you get the gist of the author's argument. Being a mechanical engineer in power generation, I cannot see a way to a "zero fossil fuel" 100% renewable electric power generation status any time soon while preserving our Western way of life intact (i.e., power at the turn of a switch 365/24/7). A full coverage of this in a technically well-rounded manner is well beyond the author's expertise (in fact, many people who call themselves "engineers" cannot grasp the severity of the problem in full detail - simply many esoteric nitty-gritty is involved - so this is not an accusation at all) and the book's scope. Thus, I have no gripe with his last few chapters either. In any event, his suggestion is spot on: this problem cannot be solved by the capitalist system without strong government mandates in a supranatural framework (the US government response in WWII was a good example), which is highly unlikely. I'm pretty sure that we're headed to the next catastrophe in human history within the next few decades.

This is a thorough, well-structured, and lively account of the social and spatial complexity that led to a dependence on carbon fuels. The negative reviewers seem not to have read the book. They seem, rather, to have determined from reading the description and blurbs (paying special attention to the names of the blurb-writers) what its content MUST be and have "reviewed" what they figure that content MUST be. The book is a complex account of a contradictory history. It is a wonderful accomplishment that opens up many new questions and possibilities.

I tried to buy this book a while ago. It went out of print or I couldn't get it. It has been a while since I've seen a Delphi Book by Mr. Weiner. I'm shocked that it's here. Mr. Weiner is a excellent writer of computer books. He always covers a computer language in great detail. I was impress with seeing his coverage of Delphi before the book went out of print. Then I bought his Eiffel Book and was blown away. So I know this book is going to leave a mark. Warning! This book may be a hazard to your social life. I want it!
