I am a first grade teacher and I am always looking for new chapter books for young readers. A dear colleague recommended these books to me and so I bought this three book set to try out with my own five-year-old at home for our nightly read-alouds. We LOVED all three of these books! I think fans of Junie B. Jones would enjoy these, but Gooney Bird is in a league apart from Junie B. Whereas Junie B. can be a bit much to handle and is the star of her own show, the Gooney Bird books are just as much about the individual classmates in Mrs. Pidgeon's second grade class and their wonderful, community-building teacher. My daughter loved these books and so did I! I have already loaned our book out to a former student of mine who is always searching for something new to read. These would be best suited as read alouds to kindergarten and first graders, and I think proficient second grade readers on up could manage these books on their own. Younger ones would need instances of word play explained to them, but I think second graders and third graders would understand and get a kick out of it.And as a side note, you must order this set from Amazon...my local bookstore did not have any of these books. I paid around $9 for the set of 3 books and this is a great price for a hardback book. I will be tracking down more Gooney Bird books for my daughter and for my classroom!PS: Reader of Gooney Bird Greene might also like the Lulu books by Judith Viorst. They are all good beginners' chapter books with captivating storylines.

Love this series. This book contained 3 stories in one large book. My second graders enjoyed the first story and begged me to read the next two.Gooney Bird Greene is a wonderful story that lends itself to teaching story writing and generating ideas. The kid began to figure out the play on words and fell in love with the main character.

My 7 year old daughter's favorite activity is reading, and I am running out of appropriate material for her! I came across this series the other day, and she has loved this first book (it is actually 3 books). It is a little easy for her, but she reads at a very high reading level; so I think it would be great for most second graders. My daughter says "Gooney Bird's stories are the best!!" Hope you enjoy them too :)

I loved reading this with my 5 and 3 year old boys. My husband and I were even laughing at some of the stories. Well written and gives information about story telling and life (without being anything close to a textbook).

I bought this for my great-granddaughter who just turned 8 years old. I haven't read them but she loves them! She loves to read and when I asked her what I could get her for her birthday, this is the book she requested.

My 7 year old boy listened to this intently and it took us a while reading a few chapters a night before bed. I highly recommend this book for second graders or near second graders.

Gr 5 Up—This well-researched biography of Mary Mallon, also known as Typhoid Mary, begins in 1906, when Mallon was hired as a cook for a wealthy family vacationing in Oyster Bay, Long Island. The outbreak of typhoid that swept through the household a few weeks later turned out to be a pivotal event that forever changed her life. George Soper, a sanitation engineer and typhoid expert, was hired to discover the source of the disease. He eventually determined that Mallon was what was known as a healthy carrier: although she experienced no symptoms of typhoid, her body continued to produce the bacteria, which she inadvertently shed. Soper took his discovery to the New York City Board of Health, and soon thereafter, Mallon was arrested and quarantined against her will on North Brother Island. Mallon has often been described as ignorant and a menace to society due to her refusal to stop working as a cook when she was later briefly released from quarantine, but Bartoletti tells the woman's story with empathy and understanding. The author also explores the myriad violations of Mallon's civil rights and her unusually harsh treatment in comparison to other healthy typhoid carriers (nationwide 50 carriers were identified at the time, but only Mary was quarantined). I found this to be a well written book and one of the few that humanized Mary. She was a proud, stubborn woman who didn't understand the implications of her condition and was ostracized because of it.

This was a quick, easy, and straight forward read about Mary. It humanized her and told her story as it should be told. Highly recommend if you are looking for something to read.

This book is simply written and would make a good story for sixth or seventh grade child who had to write a report. it introduces health concepts in a simple and straightforward manner. I would recommend for preteen reading.

Terrible Typhoid Mary is a great book that gives a concise overview of what is known about Mary Mallon's life. The book provides enough background information about medicine and society in Mary's time to really set the stage for the story. I enjoyed this book and will recommend it to others.

Baruchel was somehow able to put into words my feelings for the Habs that I'm never able to articulate quite right. His weaving of funny, sometimes serious, but always heartfelt family stories and histories with the ever present rouge, bleu et blanc will keep you turning the pages. This is MUST read for anyone who has dedicated themselves to the Habs through the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Good read, good insight on being a fan. You don't have to be a Habs fanatic to understand the highs and lows of being a sports fan.

Love it lol every chapter not a hand fans but I understand as a bills and sabers fan it's the same for everyone who sports teams

My husband and I love the Habs and Jay Baruchel. We're very much loving the new book, and it delivered quickly.

Great read for any hockey fan.
