4.5 stars.This is one of my favorite current series. The writing (plot, characterizations, dialogue) and art (facial expressions, costumes, scenery, backgrounds) are all fantastic.In this volume, we learn of a previous group of explorers from 1801 (Lewis and Clark started in 1804, and that is the year in this story as well). Their story and their encounters with monsters runs parallel to our protagonists. It is excellent and interesting storytelling. Captain Helm, the 2nd in command of the previous party, is the main character in this volume. His journey and reactions are fascinating.Dingess hasn't fallen off a bit. This series is outstanding.

I really enjoy this series because I find the juxtaposition of fantasy and historical characters to be really wonderful, and the art is amazing. I've been following the series since the first book and each has been fun and intriguing.

Definitely worth every penny! There is such a hunger to see what could possibly happen next . I savor every paragraph

This book is ok. Some of the Horus Heresy novels are absolutely amazing. Some are meh. Not terrible, but not great either. A lot of this is because there's such a plethora of writers writing them. But then there's books like this which is basically just a compilation of short stories. Most of the stories aren't bad, but they're not great either. If you're a fan of the series, be honest, you're going to buy this regardless of my review. But none of the stories offered in this book really reveal anything new you didn't already know, they don't develop any character in any way that will amaze you, and they don't further any plots within the overarching story. Realistically, even if you're deep in the Heresy series, but you accidentally skipped this one, it wouldn't make a lick of difference.

War without End is anther short story collection. I get why some are irritated by these for being "padding" but I really did enjoy some of these.The Phoenician, while short is my favorite. The view of the Fulgrim-Ferrus Manus duel from the view of a dying Space Marine.There is another wonderful story with Fulgrim and Manus.The stories about the Knight houses never do much for me.The story behind the 7 artifacts of Vulkan.I may be the only one, but I like the Custodians.Also like a Night Lord story.Fabius! Does he have his own series? I need to check on that.A good pick up IMO.

A large 600+ page anthology set in the Games Workshop Horus Heresy universe. Frustration with the anthologies in this series continues as about 1/3 of the material has appeared elsewhere. This could easily have been at 300-400 pages and been all new.Having said that the writing overall is a marked improvement on some of the series previous efforts. There is a refreshing lack of "everything go boom" for endless pages as well as a lack of some of the more bizarre tangents into psychology and attempts to be vaguely "literary".Both the stories themselves and order of appearance in the book have a good flow to them. And there were a few interesting twists to characters we've meet before. And therein lies the strength of these collections, it allows these characters to more developed and fleshed out while not distracting from the main stories they feature in.Overall a nice, if frustrating at times, addition to the series.

Is there anything that is so massive and comprehensive as the Horus Heresy/Warhammer 40k Universe? I picked my first book one year ago and between Horus Heresy and 40k I have read 53 titles so far. With Black Library using multiple writers you never get bored of a particular authors writing style.

Got this for my kid who is a HH series fan. The stories here kept him engaged and we had to warn him if he won't go to bed, we will toss the book away.

So much of what is published seems to be aimed at either the mega church, or churches that want to become mega churches. It is nice to discover a book that is designed to help the small church be more effective, regardless of how much it might grow.I believe the author's emphasis on the pastor being involved is critical. When the pastor does not support the Christian Education program, he is making a powerful statement about how little value it holds. But when the pastor fully supports it, that also makes a powerful statement about how much others in the church should support it. This book will help pastors really support Christian Education in their churches.

A good read for sure but the title is a little misleading. This book is centered around two specific events and the transition between the two is rather rough. The first 150 pages are about the Mayflower voyage, the first Puritan settlement in Plymouth, Massachusetts and their symbiotic relationship with the Pokanoket tribe. The focus of the second half of the book is the Puritan vs. Indian conflict known as King Philip’s War. This involves all of New England and happened about 65 years after the Plymouth settlement is established. Frankly, I was a little lost during the transition and it was a hard to follow for a few pages. I think that a more appropriate title would have helped. Something like the “Mayflower and King Phillip’s War” or “The Puritans in the New World 1610-1676” would have been more accurate.The settlement in Plymouth would not have survived the first year if it were not for their relationship with the Pokanoket Indians. The New England tribes were decimated by European diseases which they had no resistance to. Historians surmise that it was the plague that struck them in the first decade of the 17th century. The plague killed up to 90% of the Indians that had inhabited New England. The area where the pilgrims would eventually establish the first settlement of Plymouth had contained thousands of Indians just a few years prior to Mayflower's arrival. When the Pilgrims arrived it was unoccupied.The Pokanoket tribe was hit especially hard by the plague and they were weakened more so than several of the neighboring tribes. These tribes, such as the Narrangasetts, took advantage of their weakened neighbors. The Pokanoket chief, Massasoit, leveraged his relationship with the Pilgrims to survive against the Narrangasetts. The two groups more than co-existed. The two groups had a symbiotic relationship. Unfortunatly, the Pilgrim’s ancestors had forgotten how critical the Pokanokets were to the survival of their forefathers. Subsequent generations of Puritans took advantage of the Indians. This led to a war with the Pokanokets that on a per capita basis was the bloodiest war in the history of North America.The lessons gleaned form the pages of this book have been repeated over and over again throughout history. Bad policy started King Phillip’s war. It could have been easy to avoid. Revenge was taken by the frustrated Puritans who could not catch the warring factions so they conveniently took revenge against praying and neutral tribes. On the other side, allies of Pokanoket sachem King Phillip killed the relatives of Plymouth descendants of whom King Phillip considered friends. The conflict spiraled out of control.The war was not going well for the Puritans until Mayflower descendant Benjamin Church recruited a strike force of Puritans and Indians from friendly tribes. He was able to convince warring Indians to change sides and join Church’s party. Church granted them amnesty and these Indians in-turn taught Church their tactics. They taught the Puritans how to move without being detected and how to avoid ambushes and how to set them. Church and his combined strike force used these tactics to hunt down King Phillip and to end the war.The book gives Benjamin Church his due as one of the first great early American Indian fighters that you never heard of. Like the pilgrims, Church would not have been successful without his reliance on friendly Native Americans.Enjoy the book.

As an amateur genealogist, I have managed to trace my family to the Mayflower. I read about the Plymouth settlements and the ships in high school, but I think we ignored this part of history in college. This book is so easy to read and so factual that I couldn't put it down. I have both the paperback and the kindle versions - I've found this is the best way to read any book I want to retain and understand fully.

Excellent! The only criticism I have is that I wish it lasted longer. Very readable, and although I taught history at one time there are events brought to light that I did not know like: French fisherman brought the plague to the East Coast. I mean I knew about the diseases brought by earlier explorers to North & South America but I did not know about the plague coming to the North East the year before the Pilgrims arrived. The implications are fascinating.

If you think the popular history of the pilgrims is an accurate and sufficient depiction of the actual events then you owe it to yourself to indulge in this fascinating book which is "lean" enough with the details to keep the reader moving along in this frank and vivid account of the origins of much of this country's history.The fact that 35 million of todays citizens are descendants from that small colony of early settlers is reason enough to warrant your time and attention.

The book was quite interesting. It certainly varies from what I learned in grade school back in the '50s. The clash of cultures combined with the human tendencies on both sides brings closer to reality what happened back in the early Plymouth colony and the other Massachusetts and surrounding colonies. It is certainly worth a read. You don't have to be a history buff to enjoy it.

Not just a well written book on one of the most famous ships in history, but very informative on the people who decided to cross to unknown lands and what drove them to make such life altering decisions. What little you knew - or thought you knew - about the "Pilgrims" and the indigenous people who took them in is greatly revealed and explained, with much sympathy to the relationships and bonds that were sorely tested in future generations.Nathan Philbrick does a great job of introducing familiar historical facts and then expanding on them and making this old story new. Highly recommend.

This was a highly detailed and historically accurate reporting of the specific period of time surrounding the Plymouth landing. It was a slow read for me because of so many names to try to keep track of (some familiar and some not), and the heavy accent on who did what when and where.The essence of the story is clear however, and the great difference between this historically correct accounting and what I remember learning in elementary school is stunning. For that reason alone, I would highly recommend this book. I would also say that the read got easier for me as I became engaged in the plight of the native indians and the unfortunate decisions made by leadership on both sides.Missing, and disappointing for me, was the exploration of the women in the group of original and first generation of those who landed at Plymouth. This is likely due to the limited information and recording by those women. There was also limited character development, again likely due to the limited information available.I loved learning of the female indian leaders, and the efforts and struggles on the part of all the indian leaders to build relationships and co-exist with the new arrivals. Again, that perspective makes this book a worthwhile read.

Goldhill does an excellent job in explaining how the myths underpinning the American health care system have caused its terrible problems with cost and quality. He really has a gift for putting things in layman's terms which could otherwise be pretty confusing. He has done his homework and fleshes out his criticisms, yet does so in a succinct and engaging manner. Many believe that the problem with our system is its "for profit" nature, yet Goldhill reviews the operations of for-profit hospitals and non-profit hospitals and shows them to be virtually identical. His demolition of the 14 myths constituting the conventional wisdom, which has so clouded our thinking on this topic, is epic. If only a critical mass would read this short book, we could actually have an intelligent discussion of health policy in this country.Goldhill makes the case that, to a significant degree, innovation and competition can solve the problems with our system. He is still a believer in the basic approach of Western medicine though, while I am of the opinion that much of the practice of medicine needs to shift in its orientation to fulfill its promise. Nevertheless, I am perfectly fine with whatever outcomes arise, provided that this happens through a genuine market system rather than the crony bureaucratic system in place today.

The USA, shamefully, does not have a Health Care System unlike most other developed nations. Instead we have conflicting and competing pirates and profiteers who take advantage of our illness and disease and seek to medicalize every experience we have in our bodies.I am a practicing physician who must work every day to bring some correct information, light and relief to patients who are treated most shamefully by disease care entities such as 'integrated hospital systems', 'health care insurers' and many other parasitic plans, benefits, restrictions, governmental edicts and frank charlatans.Health care reform is impossible in this current climate of political stagnation, bribery and grotesque governmental mis-steps over the past 50 years.Only when we, those who benefit from health and disease care, are truly informed of the ridiculous waste of nearly half of all "medical care", and all refuse to fund it any longer, will we be able to afford appropriate and improved care.We will have to take full responsibility for our life time health care and dying costs as Mr Goldhill says.

The author does a decent job of comparing our current healthcare funding mechanisms to a more patient oriented funding model the takes advantage of market economies and improves visibility of costs, choice of funding sources, and segment the healthcare market into more natural subgroups. He also understands that the current system is incapable of being reformed in a meaningful way. All is not lost, the author lays-out a pathway for positive change the May gradually change our currently inefficient system into a more nuanced, customer-driven, market-oriented model that provides more choice, better care, and ultimately more reasonable cost.

The review of healthcare options and what is perceived as wrong with the system provides some insight into the argument against socialized medicine and highlights potential issues that need to be addressed. The problem I see with this is that is an opinion piece based on personal feelings with no footnotes to actually tie facts to claims in the statements that were made so they can be validated.

An eye-opening objective analysis of the workings of the current healthcare system. After reading it, one can see that Congress is attacking the problem in a completely incorrect way. It's a huge political scam, as are many issues handled in Washington. They truly should overhaul the way the system works instead of arguing about who is going to get healthcare, and who is going to subsidize those who can't afford it.

It is necessary to control the exorbitant cost of medical care in the US. This book gives a concise and convincing argument for more competition as a way to improve service and reduce expenditures.It is incumbent that we make some drastic changes to our run away medical costs.
