So many grammar resources that you find online (and even on bookshelves) cater towards minor grammatical quibbles – “your” vs. “you’re,” “who” vs. “whom” and so on – without addressing the fundamental structural rules of the language. I’m happy to find that the Complete English Grammar Rules by Farlex is exactly what it says: the complete English grammar rules. Communicating with others is a big part of what I do for a living, so I always need to be sure that what I write and edit are as grammatically correct as possible. The amount of detail that this guide provides is actually staggering, and for any topic I’m uncertain about I am always able to find thorough explanations and helpful examples. While it does include some of the commonly confused terms and expressions, there aren’t a huge amount – it really is meant more for those who want to learn about the actual structure of the language, and how to write and speak correctly. One thing I especially appreciated was the explanations of outdated rules compared to accepted modern usage. The book always outlines what is or was commonly thought of as “correct” or “proper” that has now become uncommon in day-to-day English, showing clear examples of both. An indispensable resource for those who write for a living!

Love it, love it, love it!This is the grammar book I've spent years trying to find: an authoritative reference that can be comfortably read cover-to-cover. I'm currently reading this book cover-to-cover and doing all the quizzes.The only apparent omission I've noticed so far is a discussion of the use of the nominative case following a linking verb ("It is I" vs. "It is me"). The authors seem to be unaware of this issue, apparently not even bothering to pay it lip service. I've noticed one example so far in the book where they use the objective case instead of the nominative. Perhaps the authors are trying to reflect the way real people talk instead of what they consider an outmoded rule. But if that's the case, they ought to at least spell this out and explain what they're doing, and why they've adopted their position.

This is a very comprehensive book, a superset of everything I have read on English grammar so far. Quizzes at the end of every chapter are very helpful. I recommend this book primarily for intermediate and advanced learners.

This book might offer a complete account of English grammar rules but the content is so poorly organized that it is impossible to find anything specific that you might need to know. The authors assume that you read the whole book and learn everything in one go, starting from page one... Waste of money! Doesn't offer anything more than what a simple google offers. Very disappointed.

This book is about 8.5 by 11 inches and about 1.5 inches thick, a voluminous book to be sure. I wish someone here would have posted that the font size is about a 9, maybe 10 tops. It's tiny! It's one thing to study grammar, but to have to try to study something so small was a pain. Sadly, I had to return it for that reason. Hence 4 stars and not 5.

Though it admittedly takes concentration and is dry, which was expected :), it is an amazing resource. I am certainly no grammarian and I dote on Spellcheck, but it has everything! It is awesome. I use it to confirm why it feels like a sentence structure should be right or else instructs on how it should be. Explains directional words. I really would recommend this book. Love the stuff I learn that I come across, too.

The author(s) of this book have written a very good book on the subject in question. The information provided is straightforward and exhaustive (complete).I have purchased many books on English grammar and is usage, but all of them provide asymmetrical information. For instance, verb aspect in most English grammar books only superficially mention the subject, if the subject is even mention it at all.This is not like most other English grammar books. Complete information and tests at the end of each chapter, tests which help to fortify the learning process, are provided. I have grown intellectually from my reading this good book.

I find this book to be very helpful. My only wish is that I purchased the book and not e-book. There is no way to go to select sections of the book. You have to go through the book page by page which is time consuming. I think that I will opt to purchase the book.

2.5 STARS - WWII fiction is one of my favourite genres so when I saw this book I knew that it was right up my alley. The story is told via two 12-year-old narrators in two different eras. One follows Hannah, a Jewish girl living in Berlin in 1939 and modern day Anna, a descendant of Hannah's, who lives in New York City.The first half of the book briefly introduces us to Anna but most of the page time is given to Hannah and her family's escape from Germany just before war breaks out. Living in Germany under the increasing power of what Hannah calls 'the Ogres' is hard. While Hannah has the unique experience of being a Jew yet looking more Aryan in complexion, this does not make her life easier and causes discord within her Jewish community. As Jews they are constantly denigrated by their neighbours and fear that their lives are in danger. This abuse, as well as the mood in Berlin at the time, is vividly portrayed to the reader.Surprisingly I didn't find myself invested in Hannah's (or Anna's) hardships. The setting and the plot were screaming for an emotional connection but it felt like Correa didn't delve deep enough into the emotions of his characters. Add in the very slowly paced plot and unfortunately I didn't feel like I had much of a connection to either of the girls whose personalities were so similar that they seemed to blend together. Personally, I would have preferred for Anna's story line to be omitted entirely with more focus on Hannah's family.After reading this book I questioned whether or not this is supposed to be a Historical Fiction for young teens instead of adults. The writing itself, while descriptive to a point, felt geared to a younger audience. It felt like the effects of this horrific war were toned down for the reader. If this book is written for a younger audience (and I could find no mention of it being specifically a YA read) I suppose it could be said that Correa was making his book age appropriate. Personally, if this is written for adults I don't think the devastation of WWII and the horror that was inflicted on Jews by the Nazis is something that should be glossed over. I also don't understand why, except for one instance I can recall, the author chose to not use the terms Jew, Nazi or Holocaust in his book.What I will take away from this novel is the fact that I enjoyed learning about the S.S St Louis, the trans-Atlantic ship that Hannah and her family took with almost 1,000 other people to Cuba to escape the horrors of war. I had previously no knowledge that there were refugees who escaped the Nazis only to be turned away by Cuba (who suddenly decided not to honour the visas that the passengers had procured earlier). ** Note: The US and Canada were also among the countries who also turned away these refugees. ** That was an aspect of WWII, in all of my reading, that I had no knowledge of and I'm grateful that I now know more about that aspect of the war.A plot focusing on the plight of Jewish refugees during WWII gave The German Girl all the makings of a unique, touching and wonderful WWII fiction read. Unfortunately, I don't think that Correa, an award winning journalist and author, delved deep enough into the issues or the emotions of his characters to make it a truly gripping and emotional read.Disclaimer: My sincere thanks to Atria Books and NetGalley for providing me with a complimentary e-book copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Since a very early age I made my mission to read and watch everything related to the Holocaust. And yet I had never heard about the St. Louis and her rejected Jewish passengers until recently. How could that be?The German Girl talks about a story that many tried to swept under the rug because it speaks of the shared guilt of those who did nothing. Cuba, the United States, Canada. They all rejected the refugees from the St. Louis. Many other countries denied visas to thousands, millions of men, women and children trying to escape prosecution and certain death. We let them die.The beauty in Armando Lucas Correa's fascinating book is that we get to know the St. Louis' story through the eyes of young Hannah Rosenthal and, many years later, her great niece Anna. We walk through the streets of Nazi-dominated Berlin, we run around with her and her best friend Leo as they see the world they know and love crumble around them, we feel their fear. And we wonder who were the worst victims, those who died or those who were left behind.The 937 passengers of the St. Louis could be just a number. In The German Girl they finally have a voice. Hannah is their voice. Her dreams are their dreams, her heartbreaks are their heartbreaks.Make the journey with her. Wander along her childhood streets, sail to Cuba, live with her and her memories and ghosts. And get to know the German Girl and try not to cry. I dare you.

The German Girl is really a story about two girls; one, Hannah, a 12 year-old living in 1939 Berlin, the other, Anna, a 12 year-old living in 2014 New York City. Anna has never known her father, who was killed in the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center. So when she receives a package of old family photographs from her great-aunt Hannah, whom she’s never met, she and her mother decide to travel to Cuba where Hannah lives and investigate Anna’s father’s life. There, Anna learns of Hannah’s experience as a refugee from Nazi Germany, travelling on the ship St. Louis. The vast majority of the passengers on the St. Louis were Jewish Germans, and they were refused entry in Cuba, the United States, and Canada.Unfortunately, this book is so frustrating, because there is no emotional power to it. None. And with a subject as inherently emotional as the Holocaust, that’s disappointing. It’s not an unreadable book, but it’s unsatisfying. The writing is decent, but it is quite often inconsistent (there are frequent occurrences of the narrator expressing one thing and two sentences later, expressing the exact opposite).The biggest problem with this book is the characters. I’m not of the opinion that characters have to be likeable, but they do have to be interesting, and they do have to be developed, especially in a character-driven novel as this one is. All the characters in The German Girl are superficially developed and often strain credibility. I couldn’t care about any of them, because I couldn’t understand any of them, because I couldn’t KNOW any of them. A few examples…I didn’t understand why Alma, Hannah’s mother, felt such anger toward Cuba and nothing at all about Germany, the country that expelled her. For that matter, neither did Hannah, and that strikes me as just so odd. It’s like their expulsion only impacted them in terms of inconvenience – there was never any sense that this family was being ripped from their home. I didn’t understand why both Alma and Hannah both simply wallowed, and that makes me angry that they wallowed. Perhaps had I understood their reasoning, I would have felt more compassion for them.The “love story” between Hannah and her friend Leo. There is no romantic chemistry between the two, and why should there be? They’re 12 when this “epic love” supposedly blossoms. Their “love” was all told to the reader, not shown at all (which is true of the entire book, actually), and so not only does the relationship fall flat, it makes no sense to me that at the end, Leo is who Hannah thinks of. I just don’t buy “true love”, because I was never allowed to actually SEE Hannah’s heart.Toward the end of the book, Hannah talks a lot about the “guilt of the Rosenthals (her family)”. Well…there was no set up for this. It only came up at the end of the book, and there were never any indications that Hannah or Alma felt any sort of misplaced guilt about being Jewish, or surviving the trip on the St. Louis, surviving in Cuba…I really have no idea what guilt their family suffers from. Because, again, I was held so far away from the characters that even if guilt was implied, I couldn’t reach it.And in my view, this is all a problem that results directly from the structure and mechanics of the book. There’s a an idiom in writing – “show don’t tell”. And it’s good advice for a very good reason – showing a character by having them act, and feel, gives a deeper, more complete picture of a character than simply telling the reader that “Hannah did this, and Alma did that.” The author essentially wrote a series of summaries of events, interspersed every so often with live-action scenes. One example is a scene where Hannah apparently has an argument with her brother. Rather than showing the reader the argument, and perhaps revealing character of both, the author simply tells us “Though he raised his voice, I responded in a whisper.” Well, that’s vague. And there are so many scenes like this.I also found the parallelism of Hannah and Anna to be so heavy-handed as to be irritating. It was done to force a connection between the two rather than organically developing one.So, with some guilt because it’s hard to criticize Holocaust stories, I have to say The German Girl was a tremendous let down. Too much distance and shallow treatment for a topic that deserves depth and richness.

Whitlow has succeeded in bringing to life the vibrant world of modern Israel from the perspectives of Israeli Jew and Arab, and those who visit from other parts of the world. The lawsuit that main characters Hana, Jakob, and Daud pursue is a complex mix of American anti-terrorism laws, financial investigations, and dark underworld connections. It kept this reader engaged throughout. The early parts of the book deal heavily with the case, but it soon becomes apparent that there is danger for all who are connected to the case. And while I loved the intricacies of the law, the characters were the real star. I had several favorites, but it is Hana Abboud, an Israeli Arab Christian working as a lawyer in Atlanta, that captured my imagination. She is obviously skilled in her work, but her faith is real and alive and was inspiring on many levels. She cares for all people regardless of their ethnicity or religion. Hana indeed is a woman who lives out her faith in tangible ways. She describes it to her co-counsel in this way: . . . my relationship with God through Jesus is my core. I know that’s a religious statement, but it’s not just a belief or an idea; it transforms everything about who I am and how I relate to all people, regardless of who they are and where they come from.” (p.354). What a great statement! There are many powerful, faith-filled moments in this book that add a depth to an already excellent legal suspense novel.My book club will be reading Chosen People in the coming months. I cannot wait to hear where our discussion will take us. I have read and enjoyed several of the author's previous books and was attracted to this book because of the story line. It seemed interesting in today's political climate. Christian novels tend to fall into one of two categories. The first is the novel as a "Sermon disguised as a book". The author has a spiritual message they want to convey and they come up with some half way reasonable (or not) plot to use as a context for the 'real' message. They usually aren't too hard to spot. The second category is to try and write a strong story with realistic moments of faith and spirituality woven into but not dominating the story. This particular story seemed to have a hard time determining what it wanted to be. Some of the 'sermonizing' seemed forced and did not help the overall story. For example, how many times do you need to mention the characters praying before a meal? Some parts of the story didn't seem to flow well because you had to get the characters into the right locations to hear the message they were supposed to hear. Maybe it's because when I pick up a novel I'm looking for a compelling story about the main subject with realistic and appropriate 'side stories' that this one just didn't quite do it for me. The story was good but and at times held my interest but not great and the faith part seemed forced much of the time. Three stars all the way.

Robert Whitlow is a favorite author of mine. He lives in North Carolina, and attended the UGA Law School. He writes stories about people living in the South. Well, I also live in the South. South Georgia, in fact, with UGA history and years of vacationing in North Carolina. So, yes, I am partial. I have enjoyed each book Whitlow has written.Now, jump to his new novel, Chosen People. Robert Whitlow has written his finest novel yet!!! It is outstanding on many levels. One, he has matured as a writer and story teller. Two, he has written a complicated plot. Three, he has written a novel that has taught me many tidbits concerning Israel, Arabs, and the Middle East. He has done so with a continuing Christian message, which is not sappy or overstated.Do yourself a favor, buy Chosen People. Do, what I did, and mark the pages that teach you something you did not know about this area of the world, so you can refer to it long after you have finished this novel. You'll be glad you did.

CHOSEN PEOPLE by WhitlowThis book of FULL of plots and mini-plots all introduced as interesting side-stories but none showing a really good reason to be melded into the primary story line. Once I figured that out, I quickly ‘read’ each entire subplot by ‘thumbing through’ the book to isolate/read the chapters related to a that particular subplot. Because the subplots were so unrelated, I found that this approach did not interfere with reading the main plot at all. What it did do was keep the mini-plots from acting as a constant distraction in reading/enjoying the intriguing primary story line presented by the author.

Robert Whitlow is one of my favorite novelists, for both his writing skill and his obvious research into his topics. And, of course, he is a lawyer, which adds depth to the legal aspects of his tales. Owning and having read half a dozen, or more, of his books, I have to rate this as one of his very best, with foreshadowing that just isn't well taught, to everyone who wants to publish books. One character in Chosen People, in particular, seemed utterly genuine, but I could not dismiss entirely just the hint of suspicion that he would prove false. To say more about that would require a spoiler alert, so I will not continue. If you want a novel that is miles above the average book, these days, please read Chosen People.I bought my copy of Chosen People for my Kindle. Had I bought a print copy, I might have torn pages out in my quest to reach the end!
